Low BMI and Gastric Sleeve

For what its worth. Last year my bmi was 3o. I weighed170. Mind u ive been obese always...205 at age 21. Ik 5 ft 4. But menapause has reactivated my weight gain with a vengeance..yep im on thyroid meds...so i go a year ago and talk to a Doc hear in Va who says why to thin,,,,great. Could go to mexico. But just not for me...so here i am a yera later now 185 still being told u r too thin to qualify. So 12,000 later and a trip to NC and Im sleeved..for me it was the only option.,! At worst Ill stop gaining at best ill get healthy under 150 Keep tuned in

I was low BMI just under 34 by surgery day. I have been between 20-21 BMI now for a year and a half. It seems like folks I know with lower BMI have all reached goal.

Hi my name is tammy I got the sleeve on April9 i just loss 22 POUND I AM HUNGRY and I feel like I not loss any more pounds what can I do?

Hi Tammy, it took me about 5 weeks to stop feeling like I was starving.. When you go on soft foods things will get better. Just keep drinking and be sure to take to have your shakes.. I made home made Soups and pureed them a little to feel like I was getting real food in. Totally pureed food did nothing for me. I started that at about week 3. Stalls will happen I've had two already. Just hang in there!!

<p>I am a low BMI gastric sleeve patient. My BMI was a little over 35 when I got sleeved. I was approved by my insurance because I have kidney disease and getting HBP or diabetes would be detrimental to my health. I'm getting very frustrated with people not knowing my history and saying I didn't need the surgery. Although a 35 was the highest my BMI has ever been, it's more about the constant struggle with loosing weight and trying to stay healthy. </p> <p> </p>

You know you health better than anyone else. I did not tell but a few people because it would have been the same thing you are speaking of. My mother was a bad diabetic and my purpose for the sleeve is for my Heath so you go for it.

I had a relatively low BMI (37.3) and no co-morbidity. I was self-pay for my surgery.

I feel that I am having good success. The pounds and inches are coming off - at my body's pace. In the past I couldn't lose weight. I've read about people who can't keep it off - i couldn't lose it. 4 months of a supervised diet before surgery, with a NUT, personal trainer and my doc - I gained a pound in those 4 months. I personally think my lower BMI has helped with my success. I don't mean that as a blanket statement - that is a "this works for me" comment.

I have a bmi of 30 and I cannot wait to get this done. Do I do sleeve or band? 4 kids and bad habits have put an extra 60lbs on my 5.5" frame. I am 181 and would love to see the 130"s again.

I know band is less invasive but it seems like so many people regret going that route?

My surgeon told me he is removing far more bands these days than installing them.

I didn't want something foreign in my body, and even though it's not "natural," the sleeve feels more like my own body than any of the other procedures. Also, my surgeon's results for VSG and RNY are identical, but the band has a lesser success rate.

I went from a BMI of 38.2 to a BMI of 36.1 six days after surgery. I'm on my way, and starting to really appreciate (and LOVE my sleeve!

When I first tried to get authorization from my insurance company back in November 2013 for surgery, I was at 35. And the surgeon I was going with told me to make sure I did not lose anymore weight. So I ended up gaining weight just to make sure I did not get denied but got denied anyway.

I am tall and wear my weight well (if there is such a thing) and I also had a Tummy Tuck from years ago so my stomach is still flat.So of course some people frown upon wls as an option for me. But what people have to realize is that they do not know ones story and journey in life when it comes to obesity and weight management and dieting,etc. Yo-yo dieting is a contributing factor to enlarged organs. My sister died in 2008 of obesity and an enlarged heart.She was 28.

I too have a low BMI. For that reason, I intend to only tell a couple of family members and that's it. I don't want to here any critics asking me why I did it or that I don't look like I need it. I am considered morbidly obese and have severe sleep apnea, RA, and back pain. I choose not to have to explain these conditions because, quite frankly, my health issue is none of their business.

I also have a BMI in the 36 range and have been asked by many why I'm having WLS. When I explain I had crossed over into diabetes 18 months ago and that I hope to have full resolution of the diabetes and high cholesterol they begin to get it!

I started out with a relatively low BMI and had a self-pay surgery with Dr. Lopez in Puerto Vallarta mid-August. It was the best health-related decision I've made in years. I've lost just 50 pounds, am eating SUPER healthfully and I don't miss processed foods, bad carbs, alcohol and diet soda. And I have my passion back for my workouts. God bless this crazy sleeve!

I had a BMI that was 36.6 but, in honesty, I probably could have claimed an inch higher in height than I did. My surgery was 4 weeks ago. Just coming out of a stall, and have had a 20 lb weight loss. I have not recovered quickly. I still wear the binder almost all the time. I have not yet begun formal exercise. I am in need of a three or four pound loss, mentally. I expect to lose weight slower but had expected to recover very quicklime due to lower BMI. No food issues with unpleasant consequences yet

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
