Marginal Ulcer 1 year out

Recommended Posts

Today I found out that I have a marginal ulcer. Had an egd done after having awful pains last night. Treating it with carafate and nexium for 40 days. Then reevaluate with another egd. Anyone have any experience with these?? I am literally 4 days away from my one year anniversary.

I'm only two weeks out but were you taking nexium the whole time?

My surgeon only had me taking nexium for the first three months or so. :/ Back on it now for what it's worth.

Yes I have been getting nauseous every time I eat. :( it was going so well up to now. I am mainly going to focus on getting in Protein Drinks as they are the only thing that seems not to bother me. Best of luck to you :) hope we get over this fast!!

Marginal ulcers are a fairly common complication following RnY. They can occur at any time but often develop in the one to two year post-op window. Mine developed at 6 months post op. The good news is that they usually respond well to medication with no further surgery required. In my case, once the ulcer was identified with the endoscopy, my surgeon increased my Prevacid from one 30mg capsule a day to two. Three months later they performed a second endoscopy and the ulcer was completely healed.

The diagnosis is a little nerve wracking but the treatment is most often pretty straightforward and the prognosis is excellent!

Thanks Dlcoggin! I'm glad to finally know what's going on at least. Hopefully the meds will take care of everything. I'll have another egd in 30 days and go from there :)

I have also been diagnosed with a marginal ulcer. This is the second ulcer I have gotten. This one is real large. The GI Dr said it's due to a large gastric pouch. He says it's releasing a lot of acid. I've been on Prilosec 40mg since my second surgery (2nd hernia repair) which took place 2 months after my RNY. I have also used Carafate and now taking 2 different antibiotics. I am now being referred to another bariatric specialist. Surgery (revision) seems to be the only fix at the moment.

What causes these ulcers and is there anything that can be done to reduce your chances of getting them? My doctor removed me from all reflux meds after the first month and I seem to be doing fine. I would prefer not to take medications. I am more or less wondering if there are foods I should stay away from.

Any thoughts?

I'm doing ok. I still have acid reflux and I'm taking 80mg of prilosec daily. I hope the more I heal the better it gets. Waking up with acid in the throat sucks!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
