Luckysmomma - 1 year later

Recommended Posts

Time flies....first, all the positives:

1. Mobility is better - my # 1 reason for WLS in the first place

2. 99 lbs are gone

3. Feel physically & mentally better overall

4. Look better in clothes & more content with myself in clothes

5. Found a Protein Shake I can deal with - GNC Total Lean ( $$, but works for me)

6. Eating and drinking no longer hurt

Now, the realities

1. My back & legs still hurt - no surgery of any kind will make me pain free

2. I have lost & gained the same 5 lbs since Thanksgiving

3. Hair loss began about the 4 month mark (even though I was doing all that I should) and continues...it has been traumatic for me; my hair was nearly all I had in the looks department...

4. I am still not in the size I want...I am not hung up on a weight, but a clothing size...I am close, but not there yet

5. I can eat junk - no problem

6. I can deal with a Protein shake, but still hate them with a passion...as I do Water

My story - I still regret WLS...I would never do it again...I am at peace with my regret...but many told me that I'd feel so much differently in a month's time, 3 mths, 6 mths, and definitely, at the 1 year mark - however, I did not, and I do not...I wish I would have never done it...I am not me anymore...I don't feel like me in most given situations...it is something I have learned to deal with especially in the last three or so months...I would never recommend anyone to do this...the hair loss is horrible plus not even feeling like the real me - those two things truly make wls not worth it....maybe to some, it would be...but not to me...so, I live with my regret & have chosen to handle it the best I can.

wow! I'm sorry for your bad experience and I know that losing hair to be dramatic I had trouble just cutting it but there different styles that you could do many treatments you can try .don't give up your skinnier healthy for new life for you live it. The happy increase the new style and placed in the clothes getaway just go with the flow. Really shouldn't be about weight unfortunately people treated me differently when I was overweight

Concentrate on the positives of your wls and what losing 99 pounds has done to your life , which u have detailed. Maybe it is best that u are not the old you. You stated that you are mentally and physically better since the surgery. That sounds like a happier, more content person. What do u mean that u are not the same person , of course u are not . You made a big change to improve your physical and mental well being. Hope your regrets are lessened.

Thank you for your honesty; you are the first one I have ever read that has regretted this decision, but of course it is a very personal one and no one can tell you how to feel.

But I will echo what the others said; hair....it will grow back! I am 2.5 years out and life is much different for me now than it was at one year out. Although I love being thin at last and healthier and more mobility and all the positive things, the first 18 months was a bit surreal; I didn't think I would ever enjoy eating again and my brain was trying to catch up with the way I looked. But it has all balanced out now; it's a huge change and it takes time. The main thing is that you will not have to deal with all the co-morbidities you would have to deal with at 300+ lbs. Your name is luckysmomma, so I am assuming you are a mother; for your child's sake, you have made a healthy decision to be around and healthy a lot longer because of the weight loss. Good luck to you and check in again in 6 months....I'll bet your head of hair will be back and you will be feeling much better!

I would like to congratulate you on your amazing weight loss, no small feat there! Now I am wondering what exactly, as others have posted, do you regret? For me I now can eat everything that I did before surgery; sliders foods a lot!

If you could elaborate that would be appreciated by many.

I was told that hair loss over a year out is probably related to zinc or Protein deficiency. .have you been checked?

You mention you don't feel like the real you. I think that is at the heart of your regret right? I would be interested in your putting more words to that.

I am 2 years 3 months out and can relate to the emotional. ..changes. I associate them with the weight loss and not the surgery itself so am wondering what you are experiencing.

This journey has been both easy (never really believed I could transform and I have) and at times very hard. My whole life has changed...mostly for the better but it is still an adjustment.

I am finally to the point where I am thinking alot about...what's next.

I appreciate your sharing your story.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
