Worried/Borderline Obsesssed with Looking Older

Recommended Posts

After the finale of the biggest loser, I heard many say how much older the winner looked after her weight loss. This is a huge concern for me. I know there is no way of knowing how my skin will react, but I hate the thought that I'll have a wrinkly face/neck/arms/legs. My thighs are horrific now. I can't imagine how they'll look after the weight loss. I'm seriously thinking that I'm going to have skin rolls hanging over my knees from my thighs after I lose the weight.

Anyone worry about the unchangable and unpredictable results of the surgery? I'm already staring at 40, and don't want to look like I aged 20 years instead of one.

Not much for you to say, it would just be nice to know that I'm not the only one obsessed and crazy.

Not too worried as my main motivation was for health but I am a girl so I do want to stay looking pretty :) I just had my 49th birthday and thanks to good genes my skin looks pretty good but I have quite of bit of weight to lose so it is a concern. I am doing what I can to keep my skin looking the best it can by moisturizing daily, face & body. I use virgin coconut oil and other essential oils and I swear it is making a difference. Also Water is really important - skin needs moisture from diet as well to maintain elasticity.

Exactly, doing it for health here also, but I don't want to age faster either. Thanks for sharing what you are doing to help. I need to start looking into it.

I am 49, everybody tells me I look younger than I did when obese.

Wow, Cowgirl Jane, you certainly don't look 49! Good for you! I don't have any photos on the lap top - need to post a few next time I'm on my PC. Do you have any advice for us as far as skin care during weight loss?

Other than my face I figure if something bothers me I'll fix it. It may take me a while to save up the money, but where there's a will, there's a way.

As for my face, I'm gonna be 40 in June and I'm not that scared of looking older. As long as I'm healthy I'll be ok. Plus, a healthy glow and a smile does wonders to make you look younger.

So what you all are saying is that I am the only one this stressed about it. Lol. I hope I can afford to have things fixed later, but don't know. I need to keep in mind the health aspects yes and research some great skin elasticity treatments. Thanks for the reality check.

Nah, you're not alone. I worried about it for a bit, but then remembered I wasn't doing this for my looks, but for my health. It'll be ok. It really will.

I have been thinking the same since the biggest loser as well. I have always liked the fact that I really don't have many wrinkles. I know it has something to do with being overweight and filled out. Yet at the same time its not enough to scare me away. That lady's transformation was amazing and she obviously worked really hard. I am not expecting to get to 105 like her. I can't imagine how she must feel being criticized for being thin right after feeling that way about being fat. I just want to be a better, healthier version of myself. I agree with the post above that a smile and a glow do wonders for an appearance, no matter what flaws are visible. So F the haters, and that goes for self haters too me included!

One reason I am content with a BMI in the upper end of normal range versus say 18-20 is that I feel that I look more youthful. Not just my face my whole profile. We are all different and have different tastes but to me skinny can look older in women. My friend is a skinny guy and he calls me betty boop because I have some roundness left at 148 that I would not have at say 125. Being the smart fella that he is, he assures me that my roundness/ curves are hot...lol. I am 5'5". Works for me, although I would l like to be under 145...but it is very individual and I know many WANT to get really thin. To each her own.

What I do for my face is protect it from the sun (and have for years) use oil of Olay regenerist products (have for years), don't smoke, eat healthy, stay hydrated and picked a mother with beautiful skin. :)

I worried alot about it too and when I was losing weight I really thought my face looked awful...a type of dismorphia really. I finally realized that the last time I saw my face non obese I was like 22 so I took some time to accept the late 40s face looking back at me. I am over it, love being healthy and am proud of my looks. If I EVER doubt myself I just have to look at some before photos.....

Don't let these fears cast doubt. Being a healthy weight has so many rewards.

Thanks everyone!

CowgirlJane, you are beautiful, and agree with your thoughts on staying at the upper end of a healthy BMI.

I was watching a youtube video last night, and the person was talking about how family pulled her aside and told her that her weightloss was too extreme. She was my height (5'4") and 127lbs. She didn't look unhealthy, but I can see how her family would think that as they were not used to seeing her at a healthy weight for so many years. I too wieghed in the high 120's in high school, and it was perfect at that time, but I feel that change might be too drastic at my age. I'll just have to see how I feel and look as I lose. Haters will hate, and so I need to go by how I feel.

You all have made me look at this differently, and I thank you for that. Now that I think about it, the friends that were saying the winner looked bad were all of my overweight friends. I'd love to hear what some of my healthy weight friends think. It's all in perception. Just something else I need to work on before May! I'm loving this journey so far.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
