How many calories should I consume?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on August 25th. I have lost 48 pounds post sugary. I am 6' and my starting weight was 319 pre and 301 post sugary.

My question is how many calories should i consume?

Currently I am consuming between 1400 and 1800 calories per day. I try to eat every 2 to 3 hours and drink 70 to 80 ounces of Water. I use a BodyMedia arm band to track calories burned, steps, and moderate to vigorous activity. On average I burn between 3200 and 3800 calories a day, get 1 to 2 hours of moderate activity, and 8 to 12 thousand steps a day. This gives me a calorie deficit between 1800 and 2000 calories.

I have not lost any weight in 5 weeks. This is frustrating. I am getting in all of my Protein and eat fruits, vegetables and whole grain. What am I doing wrong. Am I consuming too many calories? HELP

At that kind of activity level I'd suggest getting closer to 100 oz of liquid in.

Also, up the Protein grams.

Lower the exercise. Try it for 2 weeks and see what happens.

This is a marathon/lifetime things not a sprint, right?

If we go too far our body tends to rebel and shut down the fat loss.

There are many excellent reasons for exercise being healthy. Fat loss is not usually one of them.

I know every nutritionist is different, but mine gave me a chart about how many calories I should consume from the start to after one year. For your time out of surgery, you should be taking in between 600-800 calories per day max, with a minimum of 65g of Protein per day. Meals should be no more than 3/4 cup each.

I would also cut out the grain and the fruit. You'd be amazed at how much that spikes your blood sugar causing insulin to be released and storing fat.

When I see my weight loss slowing down, I go back to basics. A couple Protein shakes per day (I like EAS Carb AdvantEDGE since they are only 100 calories and 17g Protein each), then three small solid meals consisting of only protein.

I also agree with BearMan that more exercise does not equal more fat loss, but if you are exercising because it makes you feel good then go ahead and do it.

I hope this helps! :)

I wish I had gotten a paper like that. I'd like to know how many calories I am supposed to have at 6 weeks out?

Me too! I'm 1 month out and would love to know if I'm in the right ballpark besides just Protein and fluids.

I'm 3 months out and struggle to get 800 calories in. My nut said that with all the exercise I'm doing, I have to find a way to get in more calories and more fluids. .......very frustrating.

Anyway you could possibly scan and share this chart?

I am only 5 weeks out and have not hit a stall yet. this is my own program, but it worked well pre sleeve and is going ok so far. To keep the body from going into starvation mode I take my daily Vitamins, drink my Water, and here is the trick...every third day I eat more calories. On my big calorie day I shoot for at least 700 but less than 900. to get to those levels I have to drink the Protein shakes or muscle milk. on the light days I stay between 400-500. I think it keeps the body guessing.

I posted this before but try changing up the exercise program if you are doing the same things. add some weight lifting and cardio intervals to your program. There have been studies that avoiding food before a workout helps burn fat instead of sugar.

I am not a doc or nut but i would try to eat 900-1200 calories a day. Cut your sugars and carbs. Stop eating fruit way to much sugar. And stop eating your grain way to much carbs. Stick to veggies and Proteins.

I struggle to get 500 calories I can't imagine getting like 800. I be sure to do a shake everyday but food wise my stomach just doesn't hold much throughout the day

I was wondering have you been losing inches? I was doing crossfit for about a year before I decieded to have surgery and everyone would tell me dont worry about the numbers on the scale is about inches blah blah blah, but the truth is I am a 100lb over weight lets be honest its about the numbers. I did gain a lot of muscle (which burns fat) my problem was with my over eating. After I had an intense work out I would eat a sh*t ton. I actually decieded not to go back to the gym until month 4 to give myself sometime to loss weight (plus save money). I would like to start gaining muscle again but I need to see the numbers drop. I am not saying dont go to the gym- I am just saying that you may be gaining muscle so if you dont tape yourself then you should start.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
