2 months out and I still can't seem to eat slowly enough

Recommended Posts

I have always had an issue with eating too fast. I have really worked very hard to slow down before surgery and since. Now though the results of eating fast are very painful yet, I can still not seem to eat slowly enough. I am not sure what to do.

I have the same issue. Do you set a timer for yourself? I use the timer on my microwave. sometimes i find myself nearly done with still 10 mins left on the timer. Lately i have been making sure i put down my fork between bites and if i feel like im eating too quickly ill just get up and walk away from the plate for a few mins...

Same issue here. Pain is instructive though. Gotta keep working on it, right?

There's an android app called "eat slower" that lets you set time between bites. I have the same problem. Ive started taking reading material to the table (and apologizing to my wife.) My whole family scarfs food down and frankly it makes me uncomfortable. It's hard to watch and not want to keep up. I try to precut my bites and spread them out on the plate so clearing it becomes a long slow journey.

My PSYCH said to separate the food into 4 quarters and eat one quarter every five minutes, roughly. That might work for you, it didnt do much for me.

I put my fork down after each bite and cross my arms..it seems to have slowed me down some...Although sometimes my hubby thinks I'm about to yell at him...hahahahaha

I have the same problem and I'm 10 months out. I've learned to slow down for the most part but every once in a while I still get into speed mode. My NUT told me to try and figure out what triggers the speed eating, pay attention to what is happening in my life right before. I think, for me, it happens most when I've waited too long in between meals. I typically eat something 6-7 times a day but some days I miss or I forget or get busy with work and skip out. Then my body starts to get that feeling that I NEED to eat something and as soon as food is in front of me the speed eating begins. I haven't figured out yet how to actually stop the speed eating but at least now I know the importance of eating something every 2-3 hours.

My boyfriend pretty much inhaled 2 servings of food and his dessert plate last night all while i was on my 1 and only mini plate! i used to enjoy eating with my family but ive taken to most nights serving them first and then having my plate. i also find it uncomfortable to eat when there is alot of noise around me. i understand wanting to keep up. its not easy but hang in there!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
