Calories

How many calories are you taking in? I am almost one year out and I am trying to judge if I am on track with normal calorie consumption. I am taking in 1000 to 1200 calories a day. Is this too much, not enough?

Your question makes me wonder yet again what the best method is for tracking (I have been having a hard time deciding what is best for me---counting Protein, cals, carbs, fat...ugh!!)1000-1200 seems about right for someone of my age/size/gender, but seems low for a male...I always thought it was closer to 2000 a day for a man, but not sure if that's to maintain where you are or lose...sorry, guess I'm no help, but your topic is one I, too ponder. I thought about counting cals, but have decided to count my carbs instead, as those seem to be the hardest for me to resist, and I figure if I stay under 50 net per day, I should see some results...counting cals always seems like the least complicated to me...maybe I should do that...ooohhh decisions, decisions, good luck to you!!

My surgeons binder of information states for us to get 800-1000 calories a day.

There's a lot that goes into that question post op 1 year.

Are you hungry? Do you exercise? Are you losing? Are you making daily Protein requirement? Are you close to goal?

For what it's worth, this is how I see it....

Every time I'm weighed at my doctor's office, I get a Body Compisition Analyzer readout, it states a BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) with the number of kcal's. For example, mine said 1714. From what I've read, that's the number of calories I need to eat per day to MAINTAIN my current weight. Since I want to LOSE, I need to consume less than that number. If I want to lose a pound a week, I need to cut 3500 calories out of my maintenance allotment each week. 3500/7=500 calories a day to cut.

1714-500=1214 a day. If I want to loose two pound a week, I need to cut 1000 calories out of my daily maintenance allotment.

1714-1000=714 a day. Of course, I exercise daily and burn about 650 calories a day doing an hour on the elliptical. I eat those calories..... So, I can eat 714+ 650 (exercising) and be near the amount of calories needed to lose a pound a week.

THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE I AM COMPLETY WRONG ABOUT ALL OF THIS. But, that's how my mind grasps it. Of course, every body is different and everybody has a different metabolism, expends different amouns of calories each day, etc.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
