Tell me about upper GI

Recommended Posts

I have to have a bunch of preop testing, including an upper GI. I'm not familiar with this. Can someone who's had one tell me more?

Not a big deal as they will give you something that puts you out. Not like general anesthesia, more like twilight sleep. Some people have a sore throat afterwards, but I never did.

I had an upper GI test as part of my required surgical pre testing. The test was performed in a hospital Radiology Department. It involved standing behind an xray mchine, drinking a barium solution and taking pictures as the Fluid mpved through my system. I did this a second time while laying on the table and turning 360 degrees, twice. The Radiology Dr said they were trying to seee all aspects of the digestive system, including trying to check for potential hernias.

It took about 30 minutes oin total. The worst part was drinking the bariem fluid. The taste was not bad, but it was very heavy. Conssistency of Milk of Magnesia.

My upper GI, yesterday, was different from Macman's. It was endoscopic, so it was like Magtart's. It was very easy. At the hospital they gave me sedation as Magtart described. Once I was snoozing lightly, they put a fiberoptic tube down my throat and looked around my stomach. They took three biopsies. But I was snoozing the whole time (not a general anesthetic, just a light sleep) so I was unaware of it. After, I woke in the recovery room it was like I had just had the best nap ever, and there was no discomfort at all. My husband drove me home, and that was all there was to it. Not a thing to be nervous about!

Light sedation, didn't feel anything. Piece of cake :)

Mine was endoscopic also. Took a nap, woke up with a slight sore throat, went home.

The words upper GI and endoscopy are not interchangeable. I went to my PCP and told her that the bariatric surgeon would like an upper GI done. Oops! They ended up calling the bariatric clinic to verify what I needed. It was an endoscopy. In my mind I knew what I needed - but I picked the wrong words to describe it...not realizing they meant two very different things.

Actually, mine was called EGD.

This is true. Upper GI is done totally differently than an endoscopy/ EGD

My surgeon does TNE--transnasal endoscopy in the office. I am a bit nervous about this but I am willing to go through this for the surgery. And yes, it is just like a regular enoscopy but the scope is introduced through the nose and you are upright and awake...curious if anyone else has had this done?

Yes I had one done years ago. They spray numbing spray in your nose so you don't feel much. It was a bit uncomfortable but not painful at all

yeah, it was not a pleasant experience by a long shot-glad I did it but he is gonna have to knock me out for a regular EGD next time >.>

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
