While most people are familiar with lapband surgery and gastric bypass surgery, there are two other surgeries that are "gaining" popularity. One is the vertical sleeve. The other is DS surgery which is the most complex and is usually reserved for the most obese population. Some people have DS surgery in 2 parts (the first being the vertical sleeve) while others have it in one surgery. Some have an open surgery and some have a lap. approach.

So, to those who have had DS surgery and to those who are considering it, let's get this forum up and running!

Are you a Sleever in maintenance? Having a hard go of it, even though you are following your plan? That was my experience, and why I have elected to re-sleeve and have the second phase DS, which promises to provide a level of malabsorption that will enable me to maintain. If you ar considering the sleeve, or struggling with the sleeve, I suggest you look at the Duodenal Switch, and get past the rumors and bad info you may have heard. DS is, by far, the most effective surgery!

I know NOTHING of the DS, and your post intrigues me. I am looking into revising to the sleeve, and now want to know why you say this quote above? I will go educate myself as best I can, but would be appreciative of any information or links that you might be able to provide!

DS is a dual surgery where you have restriction (the sleeve part of the surgery) and malabsorption (the rerouting part of the surgery). The shortened part of the intestine prevents the absorption of about 70% of the fat calories. Like all surgeries, carbohydrates are still mostly all absorbed (carb absorption begins in the mouth).

Some people have the surgery in one phase and others have it in 2 phases about 6 months apart. You need a skilled surgeon and it's a surgery that is usually reserved for the most obese patients. It is associated with the best outcomes in terms of weight loss.

Hi all! I am a pre-op DS with Dr. Keshishian in Glendale, California. Hoping to get all my paperwork and tests done in order to have a late January/early February surgery date. I'm a self-pay, so going to travel to sunny SoCal for some Medical Tourism.

I just discovered this website tonight, so thought I'd join you in making a more active community for the duodenal switch - I was surprised that wasn't even a surgical option when I registered here! What's up with that?!

Hi Tater,

DS is the newest, most involved, and least "popular" of the weight loss surgeries. Hopefully, it will get it's own headline soon. I too was a self pay but revised to DS after the sleeve did not give me the results I needed. Going to a sunny climate to have the surgery in the dead of winter sounds great to me. Welcome!

Hi everyone! I'm planning on getting the DS. I have to lose 97 more lbs so that I am considered healthy for the surgery and also for my insurance to cover me. I have already lost 38 lbs in 1 month and 5 days. With cutting back on my proportions on my meals and eating better. I'm very excited to get the DS and can't wait.
