Esophageal Manometry Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Wow!

I just had my esophageal manometry last week.

Does every surgeon do this prior to WLS?

I had such difficulty getting that tube down, but I stuck with it and so did the technicians doing the test.

I would encourage everyone, you will get through it. But not a plesant experience.

How is this different from an endoscopy?

Yes, very different from the EGD.

Mine was done in the office, no anesthesia.

Simply put,it gauges how your esophagus works. A very thin tube goes up your nose and down

your esophagus that has sensors in it.

Once you have it in you have to swallow a small amount of liquid, mine was saline, every

30 seconds for 10 swallows.

I could "see" my esophagus as the swallow went down to my stomach, on the machine.

Just curious if it is widely done, because in 2007 when I qualified for the Lab-Band

they didn't require it. (I never got the banding done, now I am planning for a VSG in February)

I've had it three times. Once five years before the band surgery. Once in August (2013) before the band came out and then October (2013) after band out/before sleeve. I hear all my surgeons patients are required a year post op too. I find "snorting" the numbing gel to be the worst. My gf didn't have to it. Different surgeon.

I recently had an esophageal manometry, and it was by far the worst test that I've endured! I had to have 10 consecutive uninterrupted swallows. The numbing spray wore off half way through the test, which was painful. My test lasted for about 1 hr 15 mins because I couldn't get 10 consecutive sips and swallows without the intermittent swallows by nature. Smh I felt like I was choking the entire time! My RN was extremely nice and considerate, which helped, a little. Yet and still, I will NOT have that test again! I'm currently awaiting results to determine whether or not the sleeve or bypass would be most appropriate.

I had to have one a few weeks ago. It was not as bad as I thought it would be. It burned pretty bad going in but only for a few seconds. The person doing it told me to stick my tongue out in between swallows which helped a lot so it went pretty quickly for me.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
