Personal trainer?

Recommended Posts

I have signed up for a personal trainer I am 3 months post op an have lost 41 lbs. Am I starting this too early? Should I wait until I've lost some more? I already have some sagging skin and I want to try and tone those areas now so to hopefully eliminate too much sag! I have been working out consistently since surgery I am up to 6 days a week at least 30 mins a day all cardio and wanted to add a bit of variety an get strength and flexibility workouts in too!! Any suggestions or advise welcome!!!!

Definitely not too early. Your trainer will assess your level of fitness and help you meet your goals. I'd go for it!

It's not too early. I'm helping a lady at the gym with similar PT kind of stuff and she started at about 5 weeks post op just going through the movements. She later added some weight to the lifts and making great progress. The lifting and exercise during weight loss (cal deficit) will help you retain muscle.....which is a good thing. Good luck!

It's not too early. I think a trainer is a great idea for someone who is fairly new to working out. There are several things you should think about for the future.

First, make sure that you like the trainer and that you are comfortable with what they want you to do. If not, switch to another trainer.

Secondly, think about what you want from a trainer. There are two major approaches: The first approach is to have a trainer show you what to do, then once you learn, do the exercises on your own. They can show you how to use the machines or free weights safely, what types of exercises to do, how many reps and sets, etc. Once they have shown you that, you can continue to do the exercises on your own, and every so often get a training session just to advance your knowledge and technique. The other approach is to have the trainer do all the above things, then continue to have them work out with you on an ongoing basis. That way they can help motivate you and be almost like a paid workout buddy. You should decide which of those approaches will work best for you. Do not let the trainer steer you in making that decision.

Finally keep looking at the benefits that you are getting out of the training. If it ever gets to the point that you feel like your trainer is complacent, or is just not really making a difference, then it's time to move on to someone else. Do not let them pressure you about buying training sessions that you don't want, or about anything that involves spending your money.

Thanks everyone, I had my first session today and really enjoyed it. I really love my trainer- he is real and experienced. I love that he incorporates boxing into the sessions. I love getting that extra stress out into the my punches. Sweated crazy and felt awesome. I will be doing this until February. So looking forward to it. And it excites me to see how I progress.

Had my session yesterday and damn I'm sore today!!!! I definitely know I'm doing something!!! It's really weird though that in the days we work my upper body it's my lower body that is sore and the days we work the lower my upper body hurts!! ??? Strange!!! Today is my 3 month Surgerversary and I'm down 44 lbs and two jean sizes and 1 shirt size . So happy and damn proud if my accomplishments!!! 79 lbs since the beginning of my journey!!

Congrats on those workouts! Yeah, D.O.M.S. is a little weird.....not sure they know exactly why the soreness is so delayed.

I started back with mine today. I made the mistake of telling her how much I love step (true story) and that I hope to teach a class someday. She was like OK! Let's do it. Oh what did I just do?

I have been tempted to let my trainer know that I want to be a Zumba teacher or aribic teacher some day. I think I'll wait a bit longer!!!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
