I'm trying to stay positive around my family but I cried today bc doc said if I'm not better, spasms, by Monday, I'm going on i.v. nutrition! I'm just bummed out now. I tried finally helping myself and now I feel I Shuda left well enough alone. Ik God will get me over this mountain but right now its difficult to sit all day wo at least a sliver of ice. The mercy part of it all is that I'm not hungry either way, thank God, just losing patience. Anyways I pray that u all are continuing being successful n healthy. Ugh..why am I putting food in my mouth. .chewing it then spitting it out..I really need to pull it together .. took my kids to cici's pizza..got some soup..which was ok..but then saw my kids food...I just couldn't help it..:( I know it would get stuck if I swallowed ...I know this could be very bad if I continue to do this.

Hi Meamo

I feel your pain! Even with a two week pre op I'm losing my mind! It's always on food. We will continue to support each other through this initial phase! One day at a time. The rupture will be far worst...keep your eye on the prize.

I'm questioning what have I done to myself...I can barely handle this pain on my chest whenever I drink water.. went to walgreens and bought some zentac...to see if it helps. I also noticed I was not mentally ready for this surgery (sleeved Dec 18th 2013) I want to eat.. and have tasted sweet potato, mash potatoes. ..but I feel terrible. I don't want any more Protein Shakes or broth. I don't know what to do. All I can do is pray...There is no turning back I know..I just want to feel better and eat what I want without pain..sorry don't mean discourage anyone I just don't know what else to do

Take chewable Pepcid! Twice a day. I was sleeved on the 18th as well, and I've been taking Pepcid every day since then...almost no heartburn and gas pain since the day after I left the hospital!

I had surgery 12/11/13. Still going through different changes. Acid reflux even when I take my medications. Cant handle dairy anymore. I however am getting creative with my vitamix. I have lost 27 lbs in 23 days. Thats exciting

I also have a vitamix. Would love it if you shared some of your secrets. I haven't had mine long so I'm still new with it.

I haven't really updated you guys in a while so here goes. Surgery was on 12/18 and the shoulder pain was terrible but I made it through. I really felt tired and run down for about a week. I've had some head hungry and I've have had my time of chewing and spitting out like all of us have had, but I'm really not hungry much anymore. Now that I'm about sixteen days out I have to remember to eat and measure or I get that overfilled feeling with pain and I don't like it. I'm getting in all of the liquids but lately it's hard to get all the Protein in. Guess I'm just getting tired of the flavors. I've enjoyed the retried Beans thinned with chicken broth and some cheese. Mainly stay with Soups, soft eggs, and cheese grits. I can eat about 1/4 cup of solids now so I guess that's good. I watched TLC's my six hundred pound life and it scared me to death because the guy lost 400 pounds and he gained back almost 300 pounds. I hope and pray this doesn't happen to me or us, not after going through all of this. Guess this shows me this surgery is just a tool I could be back here again. It makes me determine to make this change for the rest of my life. I pray that we all succeed in our journeys. Also my prayer and thoughts are with our friend Deez. Wishing you well and a I hope your home soon.

I was sleeved last Tuesday (4 days ago). I have two problems right now: a painful burn-like rash on my chest (not where the tape or incisions are) and a heck of a lot of gas.

I suspect the rash was from when they put the sterilizing solution on - the rash is where there are folds of skin. Doc office told me to use hydrocortisone cream and it seems to help.

I'm doing lots of walking )which helps with the gas), but when I sit down to drink something, the gas acts up. How long will this continue?

Hi Meg, if the rash doesn't seem go go away with the hydrocortisone, try yeast infection cream. I sometimes, esp in the summer, would get yeast rashes in some folds of skin. I buy the generic 7 day yeast kit in the feminine product aisle as it has the biggest tube of cream in it.

I must say the BEST thing I've eaten on puree stage is WENDYS CHILLI pureed in the blender. OMG YES and only $1.60 with tax. (My inner fat girl is saying thank you god for something so good)

Agreed! I was moved to soft foods on Thursday. That was my first meal. Mmmm! I'm gonna try refried Beans with cheddar, salsa, and sour cream for lunch today.

I got them underneath my breast in the summer. What worked for me was Tinactin (Jock Itch spray). It also felt good going on the skin because it came out the can cool. Cleared it up in no time at all...creams were too greasy for me.

My inner fat girl keeps asking me "Why on earth do you just keep on walking past the candy isle every time we go to the grocery store? Not to mention the bread isle! Are you trying to get rid of me!?!?!?"

Yes, chubs. I am. ;-)

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
