December 2013 Sleevers Come In!

Recommended Posts

I didn't ask for or expected pics but my surgeon did provide my mom with 4 small picks that depicted my original stomach and my liver and along with a pic of my new sleeve and the hiatal hernia repair .... Grosses me out even though it all looks so perfect and clean

It's my 1st night home (spent 2 nights in hospital) and although I'm still taking pain meds I don't need them as often

Pretty cool , I hope my doctor does that !!!

it's really a good thing as our hair is full of germs and we are always putting our hands in our hair and on our face. That's why we nurses have such dry, red hands from washing them all the time. Lol

I have to do the same thing, wash night before, with anti batty soap, then this packet the hospital game me and again in the morning ... the packet they gave me I think they want me to use it for like 5 minutes... of course I will do it because I want to be a good patient, but I hAve to be at hospital st 5 am and that makes for an early morning.

Well - The ONLY person I've told about my surgery just said to me:

"You've completely wrecked our routine"!

So much for support. I'm so pissed right now, I feel nauseous !!

Wow, sorry your so hurt over her statement. I pray this is just a surprise to her a she will rethink her comment. Just remember you moving on to a new healthy person who will have greater compassion for those still fighting obesity. Send love your way.

That's not cool. So.etime people are jealous and say mean things or they are scared and can't have control of the situation. It is very unfortunate they are being like that.

QUESTION??? TO THOSE WHO'VE BEEN SLEEVED!!!

- Did you ask to see what your stomach looked like, or if they took pictures etc.

I'm very curious to know what it looks like on the inside!! Like was it fatty, was my liver smaller , the list goes on an on..

I asked about my stomach. Doc said it was normal in size as was my liver and not much fat around either. He said, there wasn't a bunch of fat to work around or through. I've never had much stomach or back fat even at my highest weight of 348. I'm a true hour glass shape, I carry most of my weight in my thighs, hips and arms. Guess that's why people always say I'm a big girl..lol They would say, you're not fat, just BIG and TALL.. ha AS IF...that made me feel better..ha ha.. puhlease! Sounds like Bigfoot (size 11 wide over here..lol) or an Amazonette!

As for my stomach, I didn't want to see it ..lol.. he said he's had patients that actually requested to take their stomach with them..ewwww... I didn't know you could do that, and he said absolutely. I told him, no thanks, you guys can keep it.

Sure. They are called New Whey Protein Shots. There are a bunch of different flavors; fruit punch, apple, blue raspberry, acai berry, watermelon and grape. I buy them at the Vitaminshoppe. Most times I just dump them in Water, but other times like what I'm drinking right now, I've mixed the apple shot with a pack of crystal light lemonade--very delicious and refreshing. I've also mixed the grape with Milo grape squirts and water, and another fav is crystal light raspberry lemonade and the blue raspberry Protein shot, or and hmmm the acai berry and Milo berry. It's the easiest way for me to get my protein in besides my Premier Protein shakes. You kill two birds with one stone, water and protein :-) Nut said it was a very good idea because I sip in over a period of time.

I'm not sure if I got a bad batch but I bought a case of the fruit punch and gagged trying to drink it. It has a horrible, almost rancid after taste. I'm hoping Vitamin Shoppe takes returns as they're certainly not cheap!

In better news, I finally received my nectar protein today and am liking that much better. I mixed the kiwi strawberry with water and crystal light pomegranate cherry. Pretty delish!

Ewww fruit punch anything makes me gag, before and after my sleeve..lol I prefer berry and apple flavors, anything but fruit punch..I absolutely hate fruit punch ANYTHING.

Have you all been instructed to do a Pre-Surgery Skin Prep?

What about applying Mederma post-op?

I had to use it Saturday and Sunday night, and then again Monday morning before I went to the hospital. The hardest part was not applying any lotion or gel afterwards. I have very dry skin. I told the nurse, I'll look like a flour cookie ready for baking without any lotion..ha ha

I had to shower in the morning and make sure to use clean towels afterwards and no products. My skin hates the winter so very flaky here too!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
