That moment when you realize all of your FUN "activities revolves around food. :-/

Recommended Posts

Cookouts, baby showers, holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, fund raisers, family reunions and even deaths in the family. All my activities seem to involve an excuse to eat (badly).

So my question is what the heck do you do for "fun" after surgery??? Just thinking ahead.

Oh and please, no bungy jumping suggestions, I'm not "there" yet, lol!

I'm in pre op still and I think about that but I'm excited about being able to really life life to its fullest!

We went to my in laws last night and there was food everywhere. I made a Protein shake before I left and drank it on the way. Had no carbs or sugar and survived! We had a great time. It was nice not being tied or thinking about food the entire time.

Good luck!!!

I go and enjoy the heck out of each and every event! No reason not to!

Mindset just shifts. I sometimes eat before I go If I know that there will be nothing nutritional but mostly there is always something to eat that is mostly good for me. I can eat whatever I like, nothing disagrees with me, I usually just choose not to eat the worst things.

Life gets better after sleeve, not worse. You just won't have to focus so much on food, you can enjoy the company!

I started doing activies that aren't food related pre-op. So my hubby & I did swing dancing lessons. My dad and I do home remodeling, my bff paint nails or craft, my aunt knits. Etc.

Yes many "events" center around food but, for me , I had gotten to a point that I was ONLY attending bc of the food. I could care less about the "event". So, after some soul searching I decided not to go as I was generally miserable at those things except for the food.

Hope this helps.

I went dancing last Friday night at an 80s club (yes, I am old lol). I danced on and off for 4 hours, which I havent done in 30 years. And when I got up on Sat morning, no aches or pains, I wasn't knackered - and I want to do it again, lol. Forgot just how much I missed shaking my stuff...

There's so much to do other than eat. Apart from dancing, in the last week alone, I have been to the theatre, walked for 2 hours in the countryside and been to an art exhibition.

But I still do eating but it's more part of being sociable rather than the food. My sister and I went to a nice restaurant at the weekend - but it was swapping stories that mattered, not the food. Met a friend for coffee who needed a shoulder to cry on.

It's amazing how the focus shifts and you don't even realise...

That is the amazing thing about this surgery for me at least. I can take or leave food, and make good decisions about what I eat now. Before I was a slave to food, and it did seem like every activity was all about food. In 4 months my relationship with food has changed in such a positive way.

I have a birthday celebration for my 1 year old niece when I will be 3 weeks out. I am planning on playing with the baby while everyone else eats! Kids always get away with not eating at events--I'm gonna try hanging out with the kids more!! :)

Surgery is scheduled for Nov 13th! This past weekend I had one of those social days...birthday for the grandson and grand opening at..of all things..a hot new restaurant where my son is chef de cuisine. Ohhh baby! I enjoyed the family and the company and basically ate half of what I normally would and skipped the cake. I was simply "aware" and it was the most fabulous day!

That's what post sleeve can be but probably only be able or want to eat 1/4 of pre sleeve!

Life IS good!

I shop.

And I exercise, enjoying how much easier it is now that I am not lugging around nearly 60 pounds.

Plus, I enjoy my friends when I go out. First I find myself going out a lot more (someplace to wear my new clothes). I think that's partly because I am not so depressed anymore and put myself out there more. And second, while my friends are finishing their meals -- and sometimes mine -- I am enjoying the conversation.

I think you'll find lots of things to do once food is not occupying every free moment, and you simply can't eat as much as you used to.

Good luck on your journey. It's going to be amazing!

You will find that you can enjoy events eat alittle and not really notice the food as the center like you use to. I am 5 months out and my relationship with food is 95% better. I still have my moments but not as many as time goes on. I went out this Sunday to BJ s here in California it's a pizza micro brew place. I had a small app. And was fine. The kids had what they wanted. Found out my bill is smaller now which is great!

You figure out the balance for you... I work night shift in law enforcement... Decompression is Whataburger or IHOP at 3 am with the shift. I have figured out that I can go and have a glass of tea and still feed my "need to be social". I have figured out that most restaurants have a good appetizer option or will let you order an al a carte item or two. You just have to ask. When I am craving Mexican food it's OKAY to have a single enchilada and 3 or 4 chips to satisfy the craving of the food AND the social time.

I have found the same applies for family and social events. Make a plate with a little taste of the things that are on your eating plan. And when it's time for birthday cake it's OKAY in my opinion to have a bite. My experience has been that I have a low tolerance for sugary foods and Desserts. So I USE MY TOOL. A bite satisfies and I am done!

Best of luck to you!! I am almost 8 months post op and down 117 pounds!! Loving everyday of this life I have been blessed with!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
