Can you lube your band to help food get through

Recommended Posts

I am considering the surgery, and one thing I worry about is food getting stuck. I've heard though that certain foods can act as a lubricant to help food avoid getting stuck (BBQ sauce, mustard, etc). Does anyone have any experience with these as a way to either prevent something from getting lodged, or as a way to loosen something after it is lodged?

For me, if i feel I am getting stuck a hot drink seems to help.

with that being said, if you are cautious stuck episodes are far and few in-between. ive had my band for a year and been fully stuck (having to bring it back up) 2-3 times total - all in which i either ate too fast or ate too big of a bite, or both.

Adding something to food to help it slide through the band defeats the purpose of the band. Its usually best to wait a few minutes to allow stuck food to break down and pass thtouhh the band.

Learning to eat small bites and chew chew chew is the best way to avoid getting stuck.

There are certain foods I will never be able to eat again....primarily "Rough" foods, such as anything breaded and deep fried, meat, or many raw vegetables, etc....also shrimp and lobster...certain texture, have to take very small bites and chew.....5 bites to eat one shrimp......

I don't think you can "Lube" your band, but softer foods are easier, and IMO safer for the band in terms of irritation and erosion....plus the pain is not enjoyable during a meal...

I try to stay away fro sauces as it will make the food go down and sit there for a while also it is not good for the stuck episodes I just have to wait until it passes , I do know when I am stuck tho and it is not comfortable for me so I wait between 15- 30 min before I can even take a small sip of Water , if the water stays down then I know I am o k otherwise I just have to wait till it hits below it does take some tie the first tie I thought I was stuck I just had productive burping , then a fewmonths later I knew what stuck was , cause I had some graphic stuff happening , don't be worried , just do what your doc tells you and you should be o k.

I find that if I want to eat chicken breast, if I eat it with sauce, such as chicken parm, it does get lubricated. I don't eat much of that, tho' because it is not worth it, as B-52 said. I usually eat, dark meat for chicken and fish, they are eaisier for my band to allow to pass.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
