I'm so happy I found this thread. All of your stories are so wonderful. When I began this process back in September 2013, I made a list called "I Will...". I've been adding to it and it includes many of the things you have posted here as NSVs. Those are my goals and the reasons I started the LapBand process. I'm now 9 days post op, still on liquids for five more weeks, no fill yet, and here is what I have as NSVs so far:

I walk every day on the treadmill and add a minute per day. I'm up to 21 minutes at 3mph no incline. I'm starting to look forward to it more than dreading it. I'm over a mile already.

I have more energy and although this was my first Saturday I could have slept in in weeks, I got out of bed early with a spring in my step.

I found MyFitnessPal.com and I watch my intake much better now and look forward to recording my exercise.

I drink a lot of Water and prefer plain water to flavored water.< /p>

My breath smells better. I honestly thought it would go the other way from such a strict diet and higher Protein, but hey. I'll take it.

I'm eager to get outside and socialize.

I'm not SO TIRED all the time.

My back and knees are not hurting from daily existence. I'm off NSAIDs for several months and Tylenol is controlling my arthritis pain pretty well for now.

My husband, the WLS skeptic, pointed out last night that the chunk of weight loss I've had since February can't be from the March 13 band since I have no fill. I pointed out that it's a process, of which this is a first step, in discipline and lifetime habit changing, and that the band will always and forever only be a tool in the toolbox. The lifetime work still has to come from me. (A week ago, the night before my surgery, he referred to LapBand as the easy fix.) The NSV here is that I don't give a flying fig what he thinks, but it's nice to prove a skeptic wrong, and see his expression when I come up from the basement sweaty each day from my workout.

Keep posting, everyone. You inspire me daily.

Omg I just bought size 12 stretch jeans and size 14 regular jeans. Walked Into the loft and white house black market and felt like I belonged!!! And I do I can wear their clothes and they fit they really really fit!!!!! Can't wait to clean out my closet again realizing I have more old me clothes that need to go all they do is take space. Have a few key pieces to remember where I came from but they are about to get backed away. Spring cleaning this year has a whole new meaning!!! Gasp me and my bestie are shopping at the sane stores picking up the same sizes. This has never ever happened in the 25 years I have known her this day was amazing

I got a pixie cut last night. My hair hasn't been this short since I was seven years old. I love it! It looks so good and the only reason I can wear such short hair is because my face is thin and my head is in proportion to my body. I can't wait to show it off to my family/friends. So far, only the doorman and porter in my building have seen it and they both think it looks wonderful. I also know that I pay their salaries so I'm not sure how honest they are being..LOL.

See...it was my hairdresser who once I brought it up, thought it was a great idea and he assured me it would look good. Why doesn't your hairdresser want to shorten your hair?

Hi. I still think of all of you. I miss you! School is killing me. But I love it too. Anyhoo, I got my very first "cat call" and it wasn't from my husband. And it felt kinda nice.

I also got another thing like that too. I went to pick up my son, and while waiting, this guy kept coming into the room, and it wasn't to talk to the kids. It made me feel kinda sexy, though I don't know how to do that anymore. Besides, I'm very happily married.

Definety, a mood and moral booster! Yay. :D

I wanted some easy dresses for this spring & summer, so I went to Dress Barn. I grabbed some 16, 14, & 12s. The 16 & 14 were too big! The 12 fit perfectly. But, it gets better - I loved this dress and it wasn't in my size, the largest one they had was a 10. It was a little tight, but I got it over my head & technically it fit. I didn't push my luck & I bought the 12. But darn it - I put a 10 on!

I did that intentionally with a pair of jeans I wanted. Put them on and was almost able to button them and bought them anyway. They became my Saturday Try-on pants. I can wear them now. My daughter told me they made my but look cute. I haven't heard that in ages.

Love these NSVs! I posted this already but yesterday I got new jeans and I'm down from an 18 to a 12 in the same old brand. Yippee! Went to a birthday party last night and saw a couple of people who haven't seen me slowly shrinking. Fuss was made and I felt uncomfortable (very few people know about my band) but another part of me felt like it must all be real if others are noticing like that.

I agree. I was informed by someone I don't see very often that I looked good and she observed my wt loss. Her question "wow, you've lost wt, haven't you?

My response. "A little". Made me feel great, though I didn't like the public fuss. I'm embracing it more. I think my brain is catching up.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
