Hello RNY'ers' date='

I am new to this forum but I have been the sleeve forum until a couple of days ago. I need to learn all I can about the RNY before my next visit with the team. The PA said because of my Gerd I am not a canidate for the sleeve. And that I should speak with a surgeon regarding this issue.

I thought that that was my decision to make ultimatelybecause I will have to live with it. On the other hand I do not want discomfort, pain or sickness andto be filled with regrets either.

Please chime in and and help me get to the level. Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated. There is wealth of information here and I would like to take advantage of your generousity. Thanks in advance.[/quote']

I'm in the same boat. My surgery scheduler called and said that the surgeon Won't do the sleeve because I have reflux, but she'll do the bypass. (Didn't care for the fact that she didn't call herself or that the word WON'T was used).

A few days later I called back and complained because I don't even get heartburn. Once I was adamant about wanting the sleeve, the scheduler said that she would talk to my surgeon and if she wants they'll send me to a G.I. doc to get test run to see how severe the reflux is. Then she May Consider it.....ha ha

Needless to say, there was another doctor that I wanted in the beginning so I called him and explained my situation to his scheduler and now I have an appt. to see him Sept. 16th. They are both for the same hospital system so it won't be a problem with my records.

My general surgeon wants me to go to someone else altogether, but the secretary for that one won't call me back.

What I'm trying to say is that I'm getting a second opinion.....and if the following test shows that the bypass is best then so be it, but talk to me about it....don't just send someone to tell me what your Not going to do.

This is really sad news. I am glad that you are being pro active in your care. I will be calling another hospital tomorrow for another provider also. I like the doctors there but not their staff.

I hate to meet you under these conditions; but it is nice to meet you and have someone going through similar issues maybe we can share our experiences and help each other. There are good ppl on these threads with a wealth of information. Please keep in touch and let me know how things turn out.

Sharing my experience here has been the BIGGEST help throughout all of this! I never felt alone or really worried because someone in my April group was also going through or had been tbrough what I was. It is a huge comfort!

Can I ask if your in the mpls-st Paul area? I'm up in the north metro and have been going to Park Nicollet bariatric center. Their in St. Louis park at Methodist hospital.

I've had nothing but good experiences there and I highly recommend them.

I'm going tomorrow actually for the last of what my ins requires me to do for approval.

:-)

Hello and welcome!!! I'd like to share a bit of my journey with you!!!! I too chose the RNY due to my chronic GERD!! I started out at 266 highest but I am very tall (5'8)!!! I also had some sleep apnea issues as well. My dr gave me the choice between the RNY and the sleeve but he did forewarn me that the sleeve could advance the GERD and make it worse but the decision was mine and wouldn't change it for the world!! It's been 5 months (4-08-13) and am down over 90 pounds!!

My roommate/best friend started highest weight same as me and had surgery 1 week after me and had no prior health issues like GERD but since the surgery she is now experiencing the heart burn real bad!!! So the choice is up to you and just listen to your body cuz it will know what's right!! I too live in Minnesota but I'm up in Duluth/Superior!!! My dr up here was Dr Bertel and him and his team are amazing!!

Well I sure hope some of this info helps!! If you need any other answers or have any questions please don't hesitate to ask!!!

Thanks for responding mgarrett1311; my issues are now resolved.I changed clinics. I am comfortable with the RNY now. I didn't want my system changed for fear of injury or more damage with my IBS. It was hard to swallow after my first meeting with the team. I only received the information if I asked questions they basically gave me no dialogue.

I would never recommend them, it was the surgeons it was the team. You only see the surgeon the visit before the surgery. Not coooool. Might work for some but not me. I was warned that the surgeons are busy and they had done hundreds of procedures. It is something that can be taken care of on the table.

No, no I want talk with them prior to gain understanding of who I am working with. My hernia is a large one I have been told.

The new surgeon said it may require an additional surgery, glad I went elsewhere. I would have hated to find this out after I woke up that I need another surgery or should have done the open procedure.

Thanks.

I went for my first appt with new providers and I am so happy with them and decided to switch. The Nut treated as if I was brand new walking through the door for the first time with no knowledge of WLS.

She treated me with respect and went over things from start to finish. I picked a doctor today, I am so excited. I was tild that I would probably need one more visit because I have lost 5lbs. I am at 223 and the liquid prep would take care of the additional pounds. Doing great and feeling great. Next appt is October 15. Pre- Authorization takes about 2days to 2weeks.

We are similar as I will be having surgery on 11/19/2013. I currently weigh 228 pounds. My doctor and I decided this surgery was best for me because of my health problems. I have high cholesterol, high blood pressure acid reflux as well as uncontrolled type 2 diabetes. My Bariatric nurse told me that once I'm down to a size I'm comfortable with that I can talk with my dietician to increase my calories to maintain that weight

Hi! My doctor referred me to the GB because I have GERD. I was at 210 in the beginning of the program but went up to 230 with steroids for my back a few weeks later. It depends on other health problems as well.

I’m pretty much in same situation as you. I have Gerd so bypass is best idea for me but I’ve had lots of previous surgery so my dr is going to make decision once he’s inside. So I won’t know until I wake up which surgery I’ve had done. Here’s hoping it turns out to be the bypass.

Lots of great information and advice on this thread!

@MinnesotaDreaming23 I'm so glad you found a new clinic and surgeon who will take your case and treat you right. I'm at what my insurance calls "a center of excellence" and while I don't get to actually meet my surgeon until after all my NUT appointments, I understand it is because so many people drop out of the program and the surgeon wants to be able to take time to make sure I understand everything and have time to ask questions. So while I would have liked to know who my surgeon is going to be and stuff, I understand why they are making me wait.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
