Pregnancy After Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

I'm 25 years old, just had a beautiful lil boy in February. I had rny back in March of 2010. Up until I got pregnant I was losing weight just fine, over 100 lbs. During my pregnancy I gained almost 50lbs, most of that was because by my 5th month I was put in the hospital on bed rest for pre-term labor and literally could not do anything but rest until I hit full term. Now that I've had him I have lost about 16 lbs but I'm breastfeeding too. I'm currently not losing weight anymore and I am constantly hungry, I don't know if it was the pregnancy that might have caused my pouch to stretch since I had to constantly eat or what. I've actually gained 5 lbs and I'm having some real anxiety about it and not being the size I was. Any tips or advice would be awesome or similar situations. Thanks.

Hi. I am new here but I know what you are going through. I had my rny in May 2008 and lost 105 lbs. I got pregnant in jan 2010 and gained a total of 50 lbs. I lost 20 of it almost immediately after she was born, but have been stuck with 30 extra lbs ever since. My daughter is now 18 months old and I have been trying to get back down to my lowest weight. My main problem is that I do not dump at all. I can eat anything and it doesn't bother me. My brain knows what to do, but it is a constant struggle. I have been trying to eat 1200 calories a day and working out each day to burn 500 calories. I am really having a tough time with head hunger and snacking. Hoping to find support on here to help me get back on track.

Hi,

I am new to this site...but I wanted to ask you....was the pregnancy hard after having surgery? I currently have a daughter who is almost 4 and have been trying for another one for a year now which lead me to my decision to have the gastric bypass surgery done but I am nervous about getting pregnant afterwards. I've heard alot of people say the csection is much more painful...did you have a csection by any chance? Any advice or details you could give me would be awesome :)

Hi there. I had two children while being 240+ lbs years prior to surgery which resulted in blood pressure issues and my first child being born 6 weeks premature. The pregnancy after my surgery was at 18 months out. It was a very normal pregnancy. I had extra ultrasounds and tests due to my age (36) and prior premature birth. I gained about 40 lbs total but my ob was happy with that. She wanted me to get as much nutrition as I could so I broke the rules. Wish I hadnt though. I didn't have c section with any of my three births and my ob said there was no need since my bypass was laprascopic. I have a friend who has had rny as well but had it open and has had three c sections. Two prior to rny and one after. She is pregnant with her second baby after rny and she is doing great. She didn't gain much weight with any of her pregnancies though. I gained about 40 lbs with each one. Hope that helps answer your question. Sorry for the long reply.

Thank you ladies for the replies! So do you think it was easier to get pregnant after RNY? I am hoping that I am more fertile after the surgery. Right now I weigh more than I did when I delivered my first child almost 4 years ago. It just got out of hand after I was pregnant. I have a lot of issues with high blood pressure and also had eclampsia about 8 days after delivery for my daughter. So I am hoping the weight loss will reduce my chances of that again. I just started with the process...I've only went to the informational session and the first appointment ..my next one is april 25th and its the metabolism test and some other stuff...I've been watching what I eat and working out and so far lost almost 10 pounds in a month :) im excited. I feel like I will have more control after this surgery.

I can't say if it was easier or not to get pregnant. I got pregnant easily each of the three times no matter what my weight was. I didn't set out to have another baby after my surgery. She was a surprise. All I can say is I didn't have any blood pressure issues after my rny. I was off blood pressure meds within days of my surgery. I can say the pregnancy was easier on my body being a lighter weight and I got to enjoy looking pregnant. With the first two I was big already so I didn't get to enjoy cute maternity clothes. I have been to a nutritionist since its been 18 months since my baby girl was born. They are going to test my resting metabolic rate when I go back but haven't said anything about checking the size of my pouch. I have been trying to stay around 1200 calories a day, but it's been a struggle.

Do you mind me asking how much you lost in the first 18 months after surgery? Im hoping to lose 100 lbs in 18 months but I don't know if that is a reasonable amount or not?

I am giving a complete breakdown but everyone's results are different. I was 260 in jan 2008 when I went for orientation. I had to lose 12-15 before the surgery. I had surgery in may 2008 and I got to my lowest weight of 155 by feb 2009. I put 15 lbs back on before I found out I was pregnant in jan 2010. I have been stuck at 185ish since my baby was about month or so old. My initial goal was 135 and that remains my ultimate goal. I went from a size 22w to a size 10 at my lowest. I know I can get back there. It will just take a lot more attention and effort than I have obviously been giving it. Hope this helps, but like I said everyone is different.

Thank you for sharing! Yes that does definitely help :) The more I read on here the more excited I get about having it done. So your process of everything you had to do before surgery start to finish only took about 4 months? I hope I can get mine done that quickly. I feel like I am on a time crunch because I don't want to wait forever to have another baby. Im only 22....but my daughter is going to be 4 in June and I don't want my kids so far apart.

Every surgeons program and requirements are different from what I have gathered from reading on different message boards. It just do happens that my surgeons program required classes that I zipped through quickly and I didn't have any problems with my insurance company approving me either. I was approved within 48 hours of the paperwork going in. I had a co morbidity of high blood pressure along with the weight requirement. I hope your program is able to go as quickly. My surgeon said I went through the process quicker than she has seen. I was motivated to get the ball rolling. Hope you have a successful process and everything works out great for you. By the way, having children far apart is not a bad thing. My two oldest are 17.5 months apart so I had two in diapers at once. Not too much fun. There is 8 years between my oldest and the baby. So I have a boy that's almost 10, daughter that's almost 8.5 and baby girl that is almost 19 months. The baby gets her alone quiet time with me while the other two are at school. It is rather nice.

I started out 223 pounds pre-op and was at 130 pounds at 6 months post op. I was told I was infertile before I had WLS. One year post op I became pregnant. I had complications with anemia and dehydration during pregnancy but delivered a healthy 8 pound baby despite the fact I only gained 20 pounds. I was lucky and lost it all within a week of delivery. Good luck on your endeavor it was the BEST thing I have done for myself & my health.... Not mention I got a beautiful baby I would never have had otherwise. My only regret.... Not having surgery sooner!

I have a similar situation. I am 3 years post op & have put on 10 pounds since I quit nursing my baby a few months back. I am worried it is going to snowball out of control since I don't dump and can eat anything. My head and body craves carbs and chocolate all the time. I am truly feeling out of control like I did before surgery. On Monday I am going to start the 5 day pouch test in hopes of shrinking my pouch and getting rid of the carb cravings.

Miss_Heather : Thank you for sharing! Thats awesome that you were able to get pregnant! Congrats on the baby! I hope its that easy for me after my surgery. I need to lose a good 150 pounds before I want to get pregnant... just to be healthier and more comfortable. So you lost 93 pounds 6 months after surgery!? thats awesome! I hope I lose it that quickly! Well goodluck with everything else you do :)

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
