I'm thinking of going for the Bypass instead

Recommended Posts

I went to see my bariatric nurse today and my mum came with me. I asked all the remaining questions I had about the sleeve and my mum brought up the bypass. She thinks this will be better for me because there's more information on it, it has been done for the last 40 years. Also I'm a grazer and the sleeve isn't supposed to work so well for us. Also the recommended revision for people who have had bands is the bypass. So now I'm thinking perhaps I'll have the bypass instead. But all my research so far has been on the sleeve. Does anyone have any advice or input they'd like to share?

I personally don't try to talk people out of their choice since it's personal decision. Not sure if that's what you're looking for. There's a RNYTalk forum. Folks here have opted for the Sleeve so if you're leaning more toward RNY you would get more input there.

You are doing the right thing by researching! I am sure you will come to the right answer for yourself!

Each person has to decide for themselves what is right. Personally, for me, I felt that the bypass was way to aggressive for me. The malnutrition issue was a big concern for me. I was not comfortable having my plumbing rerouted and risking other serious complications from messing with things that didn't need to be messed with after all. I tend to be a grazer too, but I have worked very hard to keep those kind of habits in check. Really, bariatric surgery is just a tool to help you achieve success it is not a permanent fix. What you do with your tool determines your success. Just know this, whether you choose a sleeve or bypass, you must work to be successful at the weight loss and maintenance. One doesn't come easier than the other. Just my 2 cents---

The sleeve was first used on patients who were too big or too sick to have the bypass. It was thought that after they lost some of their weight the bypass could be done. They found that most people were so successful with the sleeve that the bypass was not needed.

I agree that it is your decision and your research will help you make it.

I chose the sleeve because my sister and brotherinlaw both had it. They are doctors and did a great deal of research.

They chose the sleeve because of the malnutrition issue with the bypass.

Thanks for your replies guys, all really helpful. Because I'm self-funding and becuase my surgeon is happy to perform either operation, I have choice. And sometimes I wonder if that's a good thing! ;-) Lol.

My neighbor had the bypass a month and a half before me and she is so upset she can't eat almost anything she said she eats and throws up most of the time, she is living of Vitamins and is still very tired, she looks tired all the time

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
