Liquid diet..mission impossible?

Recommended Posts

I start my preop on Sunday..2 weeks of nothing but liquid. I have the worst anxiety about it and frankly I feel like its just not possible to live 2 entire weeks without food. Like at this point I can't imagine going 1 day without food let alone 14. How.is.this.done?? So much of my life is focused around food..I'm scared of this diet!!

I did a 7 day juice diet last year. As in juice from my own breville juicer..using mostly veggies. Once I got past day 3, I was fine.

Honestly, the detox the first 3 days was the hardest part. It was strange for sure to only drink when my family was chewing food. But then I got to the point where seeing people chew food in large quantities would greatly disturb me.

Oh, and I'm right behind you on the full liquid diet. I find out this Thursday when I begin mine.

MrsFullerRN, I'm going to ask what I hope is not a stupid insensitive question. Didn't you know about this part of the process before you signed on the dotted line? I'm going to assume you did and are now just panic'd face with it right in front of you. Relax.. you can do it. just think about the end result. this is the time when you must use the your head strength and your mind over matter part of your brain. An all liquid diet is not easy.. I'm not gonna lie.. But its well worth it.. Think about the new you , that you want to see when this is all over.. Now is the time to begin to gain control over food and not let food control you. You had the strength to choose this process, and I bet you have the strength to make the journey. Relax you can do it

I just finished my clear liquid diet, 15 days. I had the same anxiety that you did. But you know what I did not cheat one time, I really thought I would but I didnt. You have to take it day by day sometimes meal by meal. Just realize that the outcome is so much more important than those 2 weeks. I went as far as to take a slice of lunchmeat out of the fridge but put it back. Then I knew i would make it. I am now post-op 3 days, home and amazed at how well i feel. There was a lady next to me same surgeon same surgery, he is still in the hospital and wont be home until Sat. I hope everything works out. She had cheated with crackers during her diet. Not saying this is the only reason she is there, but my motivation was that I was going to succeed and if i can do 15 days on nothing, then the rest will be very easy. Good luck you can do it

My surgeon had me do a 7day liquid diet once a month in the three months leading up to surgery. I was so glad he did. After the first one, the rest plus pre-op were a piece of cake. I wasn't all stressed out before surgery either!

Of course I knew..I just haven't had to think about it until now..staring at this box of shakes on my country and knowing that's all ill eat for three weeks...crazy

It does seem daunting, but you can do it. You'll be getting yourself in the best possible condition for surgery and that's huge. It's hard but try and think of it as an opportunity on your terms to steer your focus from food. There is a great thread on here about just that. If you haven't read it and you are struggling give it a read http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/78443-the-pre-op-diet-is-not-a-punishment-its-an-opportunity/

I liked to try my shakes different ways, blending them with a ton of ice till it was almost frozen, warm like hot cocoa... adding some sugar free syrups to change the flavor a bit.

You got this, and we are here to remind you just how strong you are and how much it is all worth it!

Take a deep breath and know you are not alone in this, after all that is why you are on this site. Mental state plays a huge roll in this. Just tell yourself you are ready and you will be just fine. If its possible, make a cabinet in your kitchen for you. SF Jello, crystal light, miso, broths and Protein packets or canisters. I rally like Chike and Unjury vanilla. SF Popsicles if allowed each program different. For me the key was drink constantly, Water for the most part then the calorie portion every 2 to 3 hours any more than that and I'd get the hungry feeling. We believe in you, so should you.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
