March 2007 Bandsters

I'm loving the mushies, though yesterday my eating habits could have been better. I was out most of the evening. First I went to a coffee house and I had a small thing of frozen yoghurt/gelatto that they have there. It was about half a cup. I had only had lunch that day eatng wise (slim fast for breakfast) so it wasn't like I was eating a ton. Then for dinner I went with friends to a bar in town. The town went smoke free at the new year and its wonderful! We can now go places like bars and I don't have to hold my breath. Its made me definitely more excited/willing to go out. Anyway, we went to a bar. I had some propel with me so I didn't get anything to drink though I suppose I could have gotten Water. My friends, of course, are terrible. They told the waitress that I can't drink alchohol now or carbonated stuff cause I had stomach surgery so even if I did try to order something like that not to let me. LOL. I guess a no thanks wasn't good enough for them. For dinner I had dip. Well dip is a mushie and it had veggies in it. Tons of basic and garlic. I'm not how healthy it was or wasn't though. And with it came tomatoe slices which I didn't eat and some cheese which I did and also some bread. I ate the bread with it because I took the crusts off and that made it rather soft. And then once I put the dip on the bread it was even softer. And I chewed really really well and ate slowly. Now I know I wasn't supposed to eat bread and I feel bad about that, but it wasn't a lot and I figured that I was eating soft stuff to begin with and taking it slow, etc. About as close to mush as I could get out on the town (no Soups there). The bread went down beautifully! Then later that night I was hungry again so I had some spinach souflee. And then I had a reeses Peanut Butter cup!

That is an awful lot of food! I think I went wild with it all.

So today I am doing better. I am going to eat some mush soon. So far I have had some unjury- a double scoop of it actually, and I blended in a bananna and a some strawberry too and ground all that up really well with my hand mixer. And that has kept me nice and full until now.

One thing I did notice last night was that I didn't finish all the dip and stuff because I got full first. So that is nice-- I do at least get full on food (well not ice cream which is why I have to be careful and ration that). I'm still having a lot of trouble with the length of not drinking after eating. Its getting better, but that is a hard one and I think that is going to take me some time. I think with all the junk food yesterday and stuff I just sort of went crazy, being allowed to eat again. I really need to watch that, especially making sure where my calories come from-- that I am getting protien in first and then veggies, etc.

I'm also going to check out some programs to keep track of food and calories on my PDA. That will help me out, since paper and handwriting are not things that I am the best at. I think this band is really turning out to be the tool I hoped it would be. Even if I'm not the best stuff it does make me full sooner, and I have to eat slower so I'm going to eat less of that stuff. And because I do have to think about what I eat (even if it isn't until the next day) I can't just get stuck in junk food binge mode. Sure, I have to do work like make good choices. But it helps me to not make the bad ones. Or if I do make bad ones, to not repeatedly make that same mistake, in large volume.

Banded today and I'm in so much freakin' pain. I've got teh liquid Lortab, the heating pad, and the awesoem family support but it just hurts so much worse than I expected. Dear Lord please help me and please pray for me guys (to whichever God you pray) I'm having a horrible time here.

Medge,

So sorry to hear that you are not doing well. The best advice is to walk. Try and get up every two hours and walk, even if it is only for 5 min. I started this the night of my surgery and am in no pain 10 days post op. I went back to sleeping in my Water bed and had no trouble getting out of it by day 3. To get better you have to move. I know that it sucks at first, but trust me, walking works.

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about--actually more about moving the port because of the abdominal muscles engaging when I cough. I often get viral-induced asthma when I get a cold so I'm hoping/praying it doesn't come to that. Yuck. Don't know how this happened--I must be run down from the surgery or something--I get sick so seldom that it's strange for me. I'll call first thing in the morning if I don't feel better. Thanks for your input. K.

momlambert;

With all the stuff going on with your Dad; that causes a huge amount of stress; so maybe even you should think about having a back up prescription in the cupboard too, so when you mention this to your surgeon's nurse tell her you want an extra prescription "just in case" you feel something coming on at 6pm on Friday night, so you won't have to bug her over the weekend.

Stress always causes me to get sick. And really I only get sick maybe 1x per year or every couple years, but definately everytime each of my parents passed on.

I was banded yesterday. So far I haven't really had any problems. Just a little soreness and of course the infamous gas!

It amazes me reading this how different the post op instructions everybody had.

My surgeon (the office only does lapband) put me on liquids the first two weeks but anything you can get up a straw. So no just having Clear Liquids the first few days!

They also have on the post-op instructions that we can take ibuprofen or tylenol of we don't want to take the pain meds any longer.

Ok so still on the clear liquid. Sorry to sound gross, but I am having severe diarea(sp). Seems like 5- 10 minutes after I have my Soups I am running to the bathroom. Anyone else have this, and how long does it go on?

Chatgirl,

I had the same thing happen. For me, it did stop when I went to full liquids. If it continues check with your Dr., when I went for my post -op visit I let them know about the problem and they told me if it came back to call the office because it could be a reaction from a the antibiotics given during the surgery which will sometimes cause a bacteria to form in the bowel. Good Luck.

Medge, sorry you are having so much pain. Did they do it laproscopic or open? It is possible it could be pain from all the air. You will need to walk around a LOT. Keep moving as much as possible. You may be doing that already, they should have told you to keep moving from the get-go. If this persist call your doctor (surgeon) most aren't in terrible pain, better be safe than sorry. Take care.

Well guys,

I'm having my surgery on Monday, so wish me luck! I thought I was going to originally be a March bandster, but I tell you what, this month has flown by hasnt it! I've gained a lot of knowledge from you all over the last month, on how you have coped with the surgery, and your recomendations on managing the pain and the post op diet, so thank you all.....its been quite a journey, and I'm just about to get on the 'ride' with you all.

God bless

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
