Did anyone ask for their stomach to take home?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, you heard right. My little brother really wants my stomach to come home in a jar. I don't know why, he's just weird! But I might actually ask them to bag it up post surgery. Has anyone had this request? Did any surgeon let you have it?

It's medical waste and it's supposed to be incinerated or otherwise disposed of after being tested and analyzed by pathology . . . I don't know but I suspect a medical facility might be leery of letting people carry medical waste home with them instead of it being properly destroyed.

yes, they send most surgical specimens to pathology. When I worked as a labor nurse, occasionally people would ask to take home their placenta. The rule was, if there was no reason we needed to test it, they could have it, but they had to leave the hospital with it immediately. I don't know if it's the same for stomachs. I saw a guy on youtube that asked for his, but his doctor said no.

I don't think it is allowed where I am from. Like others have said it is classified as medical waste. It is worth asking your surgeon though he may give you strange looks lol. I would like to see pictures of it it at least. Has anyone seen/gotten photos from their surgery?

I LOVE this question! I am horror film reviewer and that was one of the first questions I asked when I scheduled my surgery. Doctor had the strangest look on his face when I asked. It. Of course he said it was not possible. But when I explained that I see some pretty twisted stuff and seeing my stomach was something I greatly wanted to do, he said he would think about it. Now something came up and this doctor wasn't able to preform the surgery and I had another one. BUT the previous one came to visit me in the hospital and he had snapped a picture with his cell phone and I got to see it. WICKED. Nothing much to look at bloody deflated pouch. But to me it was awesome.

Interesting..... I highly doubt it, but like unbesleevable1 said, people ask for their placentas and get them, usually, so I guess it never hurts to ask. You might want a back up plan request such as, can he take a picture....

Love it! I thought about it, but forgot to ask. I think there's enough on YouTube to satisfy my curiosity.

It is very normal practice here in any medical procedure. The forms actually have a box to sign to give permission for the hospital to destroy whatever they remove for you and another for indicating you wish to take whatever they remove home. While not common, is it accepted practice.

Here, it is a cultural thing. It happens mostly with placenta, but then some people want all that is removed in order to dispose of it is a culturally appropriate way. I know people who even bury their cut hair and clipped toenails :-)

As for me? I was happy for them to keep it!

I wanted to ask for a picture of mine but was too scared to ask. I had to settle for a pathology report describing how big it was.

Ewwwww!!! Mental picture. My doctor took a picture, I didn't wanted to see it, he showed my sister. He said I had a very healthy stomach. It was light pink.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
