I love this thread!! I almost didn't get back into the USA from Japan because the customs officer didn't believe my passport was mine, nor my drivers license!!! The Japanese just glanced at it and did the retina test...no problems there. But sure had a hard time in San Francisco. I'll get a new passport pic before I ever travel again!! And DL is up for renewal in Feb. I just started a new job, so the badge is a wonderful pic of me!!

Everyone at work keeps telling me my work ID doesn't even look like me since I have lost over 100 lbs. I am going to keep it so it reminds me of where I have been. I just renewed my license on line.. In 2 years I will have to go to DMV to get a new picture. I will wait until then.

At the risk of 'dating' myself here, I will say that my old license was one that was "good" for 10 years (now they expire every 5??) So I had no plans to get a new one until it expired in Jan. of this year. So for 2 good years I did not look much like the person in my old photo. I would get double-takes a lot and only one guy said something to me...I just brushed it off and said that photo is almost 10 years old.

The other new thing from the DMV here is you don't get to walk out with your new license...what? I had to wait 10 days for them to "mail" it to me and they gave me a temporary license that was just a piece of paper. Crazy!

Oh and I did get to keep my old one, they just put a hole punch through it and handed it back to me. Good reminder of where I never want to be again!

That's what they've always done in Texas.....mail it to you at their convenience.

I was sleeved on 8/19 and my license expires in November. Even though I could have renewed it several months before the expiration date, I plan on going on the last day possible (I will be nearly 3 months post op at that time). I can't wait to see my progress by then!

Yeah well, 10 years ago that was the ONLY consolation prize for waiting 3 hours for your "turn" at the window, was you walked away with your new shiny license right then and there. Pffft. This mailing business, what a waste, why could they give you an "instant" license 10 years ago but now they have to go through the trouble of printing you a temporary, then waste more time and money doing the mailing deal? Gah! The only thing that would be good about the new way is if they are doing a record check or something like that during those 10 days...

Just last week I was at the VA clinic changing my last name (was married 20 mths ago and just now getting to it - it's the very last place I hafta change it). Had to take a new pic for my health ID card. Wow. What a difference. And the last one was after an almost 75 lbs loss after my lapband. I wish I woulda kept me original card, 248 lbs. The pic is still on the main computer and I hear "Wow" everytime someone looks it up.

I now tell the truth on the weight part of my drivers license. First time ever. Lied about it on my 1st license at 16 and since. Wonder how many people are actually the weight their license says they r?

Any pawn shop that sells guns can do a background check while you wait. You'd think the DMV could. The reason it takes so long is they have to install the tracking microchip.....shhhhh.

You just made me think of the weight on the card!

Ok even though I was upset when it took that picture it didn't stop me from lying about my weight!! Just looked sure enough, it says 170!

Damn according to that license I've only lost 13 pounds :P

I'm screwed!

I was thinking about this very topic a week ago when someone looked at my DL and could not believe it was me. For one I was at my peak weight 85 pounds ago, also a disproportional amount came off my face and now I have a beard. I would not recognize myself. i will have to see if they will let me change the picture because I have over 4 years to go before it runs out.

Oh yeah I forgot about the tracking microchip, oh well, NOW it makes perfect sense. LOL! :P

So in Texas did your old one last 10 years or what is the deal on that? Not that I'm complaining but well, it IS a good moneymaker if you have to haul people in every 5 years instead of every 10...

The lady when I changed my last name said whats your weight honey- I think it's a bit high (oh thank you sweet DMV lady)! I had it at 185(a good 60 plus pounds low). I got to tell her 150 and she laughed and said I would have never guessed that high! Oh you sweet sweet soul!

Thank goodness Texas doesn't require weight on the license. But when I was a kid my mom got pulled over and while the cop was asking her questions and writing the ticket, he asked her for her weight. When she later realized that information was no where on the ticket, she was pissed. She went to court and called that cop to the stand and read him the riot act. You had to know my mom....she was a cross between Courtney Love and Al Pacino....only less subtle. In the end the judge gave her a $50 fine and made the cop apologize.

That is amazing! My weight isn't on my license (thankfully- although honestly I wouldn't care too much anymore), but they do store it in the computer and ask! They even asked my little brother when I took him to get his last week. Gotta love it!

And how have I missed for a year that you are a fellow Texan???

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
