Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

A year out and im frustrated

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on July 11th 2012. I lost a whole bunch of weight, not as much as I'd like, but enough to be comfortable with. Then I got complacent and I haven't lost any weight in months! I've been stuck at 230 forever! My eating habits are not the greatest but they aren't the worst either so I'm looking for advice on how I can get back in the groove of things. Did anyone else go through this? Do you have any advice on how to restart my weight loss again? Thanks!

It helps to go back to basics. Consuming mostly Proteins and some veggies. Cut out the carbs and exercise. You can do this! :P

Do you log your food into something like my fitness pal? It really helps to know exactly how many calories carbs and fats you're taking in so you know how to adjust.

You didn't say if you are exercising either.

I'm afraid I'm not exercising :-( I've just got this mindset that its too late, I've passed my window of weight loss and there's no more losing. I know it's irrational but I do want to start exercising

It is never too late. Exercise provides so much more than weight loss on the scale. It makes me feel strong and confident like I can take on the world...or at least an island (I live on Oahu in Hawaii). Maybe exercise is just what you need so you feel the "I can do it" moments again. Start with small goals. Each accomplished goal will do wonders on your motivation, confidence, and belief in yourself! You CAN do it!!!

I also recommend weighing and measuring your food and tracking fluids. I use a whiteboard on the fridge. Just make hashmarks for fluids and notations for Protein. Get in at least 65 grams of Protein per day and eight glasses of Water. Cut out treats on most days and stick with low fat protein, non-fat dairy, non-starchy veggies, fruit, and whole grains, in that order.

You are only done if you decide you are done. It may be slower, but it will come off.

Don't give up. You should keep track of your food for a few days and make sure your not eating too much. I've lost 162 lbs In a year and I have not exercised! I know I should but but I hate it.. As long as your not eating too much you should be losing even without exercise. Good luck!

The magic word! The death to our healthy changes!

complacent[ kuhm-pley-suhnt ]

adjective

1. pleased, especially with oneself or one's merits, advantages, situation, etc., often without awareness of some potential danger or defect; self-satisfied: The voters are too complacent to change the government.

2. pleasant; complaisant.

Yes, not to sound snarky but you already knew the answer to kick starting your loss again before posting! Saying things like "My eating habits aren't the greatest" indicates you know that you could be doing better. As suggested, tracking is the best way to start, and adjusting your diet back to where you were losing should do the trick.

The closer we get to goal the slower the process and the less returns we see on the scale for our hard work. Complacency sets in because you have achieved a lot and look and feel completely different. And of course, while your eating habits might not be the best, they aren't as bad as prior to surgery. So it's easy to fall into a routine and just let it slide.

But staying diligent is part of long term maintenance. You don't have to achieve goal to be a success, but staying very diligent to avoid a regain is absolutely imperative.

Good luck. I hit a wall around a year out, myself, and it took me another five months of plugging away to finally hit goal.

That mindset will get you no where, trust me I've been there. Felt like I missed out on some of my "honeymoon" window also (lost -2lbs in my fourth month post-op) but I'm here to tell you that I'm closing in on 3 years post-op and giving up is the worst thing you can do. I'm currently working off my regain and while it takes dedication, patience, perseverance, and a whole lotta the right attitude, IT CAN BE DONE.

Giving up is the worse thing you can do because you'll be gaining weight.

A lot of people have given you good advice here. It's up to you whether you take it and start really making an effort. Nothing changes if nothing changes.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
