I just had a 20oz gatorade a week postop in 30 min or so....why can you only have 4oz an hour?

Recommended Posts

I was thirsty and it worked well, flavor wise. They say we can only handle 4oz every hour, but I just handled 20. I'm not in pain really, didn't feel too uncomfortable. Did I just stretch out my stomach? What's the reason for 4oz when you can drink more? D:

I don't think you've messed anything up. I was drinking 60 +oz a day by the end of the 1st week. I don't know where the 4oz thing came from, unless, it is a recommended minimum Fluid intake. I have never felt full from drinking my Crystal Light. I would think the more you can drink, the better. Just watch out for the calories in your drinks.< /p>

I have not heard the 4oz in an hour recommendation, outside of the first thing I drank post op. The approximate capacity of the sleeve is 4oz once the swelling goes down, but the reason to drink slowly is because you only have 15% of the volume you used. I know that was one of the hardest things for me, because I could easy down a 20oz pop with one gulp pre op. The first time post op I took a big drink in the manner I used to, it was a pain that I still remember.

I do want to ask you about something though. You said, " I'm not in pain really, didn't feel too uncomfortable." that to me means that there was some discomfort at the very least. There should not be. If there is any discomfort, you drank too fast. Slow down, you racing or something? :)

Thanks! I'm just worried I'm drinking TOO much in a short time? The 4oz I know is for liquids, don't have more than 4oz an hour. But I did 20oz in 30ish min

I heard the week after surgery you should have 2 oz every 15 minutes. You are more than a week out, so i would think you are fine, but if you really feel pain i would call the Dr.

For me, the issue has been taking too big gulps instead of sipping. Large gulps feel like a punch in the gut! Now I just sip all day.

I've just been struggling to eat slowly. I'm starting to lose my "fullness" and that's why I'm a little scared. I had a big meal the other day for a reward, one of those costco frozen yogurts. I had massive diarrhea after that. I'm not even passing gas well. :|

I've noticed that too. When I drank it, I took small sips but still drank it relatively fast. I'm not in much pain at all. There's a little dullness and sore pain but I'm guessing its normal.

Calm down, at this point you wouldn't stretch your stomach. Most likely you would cause a leak (but don't freak about that either) If you over stuffed yourself.

Your a week out? So you are eating full liquids? You should measure your amounts.

DO NOT push it until you feel full, your stomach is still numb and most likely you won't feel much right now, plus the restriction comes into play when you eat more of a dense Protein.

You are also a man?? I think your stomach will be slightly bigger than a females also.

Sorry I freak out a bit. By a leak, do you mean a leak of my incisions? How do I know if I have one?

I'm eating full liquids yes, and a week out. I measured exactly 4oz for every meal, but now I'm not feeling full and it's really weird!!!!!!! So I should have more Protein and feel more full?

I could drink a 20 oz gatoraide after week 1 in about 45 min-an hour. Nurse said this was okay as fluids were important. BUT 8 oz of Protein Shake took a full hour until about week 3. A 5.3 oz cup of Greek yogurt would also take an hour, just the difference between true fluids and full fluids. I am now 9 weeks out and just fine and still drinking my minimum 64oz and getting the top end of my Protein each day.

Liquids just pass through quicker. Listen to Laura, take it easy. Slow it down. You have to learn to tune into your stomachs feelings. It doesn't always scream at you. The idea is NOT to take it to the max.

I am only 10 weeks out today so I don't have the experience that others do, but I am not yet able to drink as much as you. The 4oz is the recommended MINIMUM so that those who are post op will not get dehydrated.

I am concerned about the bolded statements above. You should *not* be eating/drinking until you are in pain or uncomfortable. The sleeve is a tool to help you stop eating before you overdo it.

As for eating as a reward? That's what got many of us into this predicament in the first place. :) I would recommend finding a new way to reward yourself other than food. I do small cups (about 3 oz) of frozen yogurt once a week or so but a large costco froyo is 390 calories and 80 grams of carbs. Those are some pretty high numbers. Keep that in mind when making your choices.

:)

Does your doc say 4oz? If so yes, eat that amount. but in the full liquid stage you will not get that feeling of fullness just yet. That comes more into play when you move up to puréed foods ( when your doctor oks it)

Do not stuff yourself that can cause a leak at this point, I do not think you have a leak but you shouldn't be eating to extremes right now (or ever at this point on) like finishing off a container of frozen yogurt.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
