Did you eat grits in post- op?

Recommended Posts

It was explained to me that at the very first, when we are learning to eat mushies, we can have things like mashed potatoes and grits.

You eat grits? On purpose?

We usually eat them in a bowl, not on a porpoise.

I was told no grits ever again because they swell & also because they are made from corn. Corn products are a big no no because they are carb loaded & turn straight to sugar. My nutritionist said, "don't come crying to me if you don't reach your weight loss goal". This was when I told her how much I loved tamales(masa), popcorn, tortilla chips & corn on the cob.

Can you pass me a box of tissues please. :(

Once I reach my weight loss goal I may break down & get a small popcorn extra butter at the movie theater. I would cry if I could NEVER taste one of those delicious morsels for the remainder of my life. May come with a side of dumping syndrome but I'll cross that bridge when it gets here.

I am nearly 3 weeks out and I think the NUT told me grits were okay for soft foods but no seed or skins' date=' I am having a hard time thinking grits are okay but want some so bad![/quote']

My surgeon allows grits as part of the post-op liquid diet. It was a life saver because I got tired of drinking and not chewing my food. In fact, grits is what the hospital provided as my first meal after my swallow study too.

Oh wow, that's good to know. I was just worried about the "grit" being like seeds and getting into my staple line, don't want a leak! I guess being cooked they are too soft to penetrate through?

Yeah... Not sure of the doctor's rationale for grits being allowed. But I'm definitely not complaining - it's nice to chew something! I even worried that I was too medicated in the hospital and was dreaming about grits being allowed. I emailed the nut and nurse and confirmed that they're allowed.

Enjoy grits!

This is what I was told as well (same thing with rice). But doesn't the cooking process make them swell already? I've never felt grits (or rice) swell after I've eaten them.

I see the point about the corn, but if I watch my carbs elsewhere, hopefully it'll balance.

Anyway, sausage-egg casserole is what's being served this morning, so I'm going in!

I'll probably try them again once I reach my weight loss goal. Zea's corn grits are to die for and i'd cry if I lived the rest of my life without ever tasting a spoonful again.

I was also told I could have grits on my full liquid stage, as long as they were on the thinner side. I added some unflavored Protein powder & sharp cheddar cheese. It felt really good to have something that felt like normal food to me. Now that I'm moving on to regular food, I probably won't eat grits much because they are not nutritionally rich...but I would lose my southern card if I didn't have an occasional bite now & then. And...a random thought I had when making my grits...why hasn't anybody come out with butter-flavored Protein Powder?

I live in Maine and your question made me chuckle. No grits up here! :)

Same here in New York...

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
