How to get pills down?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I have to take omneprezole (sp?) 1 time a day. Actigall 2 x a day plus 3 other pills for skin allergy/rash. All need to be crushed as I am less than a week post. What is the best vessel for getting down all the nasty meds? Any suggestions? Also...how long until I don't have to crush them anymore. BTW., I have been using Jello mixed with a little cool whip per my NUT but it is still terrible!!!

I bought a 4 dollar pill crusher at Walmart. It looked like it was might be junky, but it actually works great. I throw the crushed Vitamins in my shake. Taste is not a priority anymore for me. I just do what I need to to get healthy and stay healthy.

I work in a forensic hospital and for the guys that cheek their meds we crush them and mix it with cinnamon apple sauce. You can try it. I never had to crush my meds after surgery, but if it is hard for you to get them down you can try it....won't hurt! Good luck!

My dr said to go ahead and swallow any pill about the size of a tic tac when I left the hospital. The big ones I cut in 1/4ths. About 2 weeks out started swallowing everything.

I am 4 days post op, I crush my pills b/c they are still a little big for me to swallow. Si mix them with a little Jello. I am on Clear Liquids for 2 weeks so jello is the easiest to mix my crush pills with.

I was crushing mine and adding them to unsweetened applesauce. It worked fine.

Ok here is my trick. Put a little applesauce on a spoon. Make a little well in the middle and pour the crushed pill in the well. Cover with a layer of applesauce and swallow all at once. Works like a charm and you won't taste a thing. For the bigger pills, I have to do more than one spoons worth and split it up.

Thanks for the applesauce ideas. Going down much easier!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
