Miralax and Milk of Magnesia seem to be popular for us at this stage.

I am very sensitive to most laxatives because increased peristalsis (contractions in the GI tract that move waste through) give me miserable cramps that last for hours. If you find yourself not tolerating the laxatives well there's always Fiber powder you can buy (like benefiber) and I started eating a couple prunes in Water warmed up at the behest of my NUT. I'm on my way to regularity!

I believe real laxatives... which have a stimulating effect on your bowel and cause it to contract... are not recommended at all for some weeks after surgery, as these might damage your very tender new tum. "Stool softeners" are, and there are a myriad of those on the market. Best to ask a local chemist as if you're not in Australia anything I mention might not exist 'Up Top', or have different ingredients. I believe the ones that draw Water into your bowel are safe and effective, and the occassional enema is fine too. Of course if you feel you are getting into 'trouble' with Constipation, then a laxative may well be unavoidable, but hopefully that won't happen too early in the piece. Good luck.

My doc just recommended taking Metamucil daily bc it is gentler on the stomach. It is just a fiber supplement to help things along more naturally. I use Metamucil free and clear you can add it to anything and it is really tasteless as long as you mix it until dissolved.

My surgeon's team recommends Milk of Magnesia (take the lowest adult dose given on the label) and Senokot.

I was told Miralax which totally dissolves in liquid. Also told not to use Metamucil or benefiber because of the psyillium.

Weird how every doc is different ....

My nutritionist said Miralax and the Dr.'s office said calcium citrate or mineral oil. Stool softeners are ok as well. To add fiber get fiberchoice chew tabs. I really have to go but don't want to push. Feel like the tidy bowl man is stuck in mid stream!!!!

Magnesium Citrate from Wallgreens. Be aware this stuff will clean you out and keep you running to the bathroom.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
