SICK, STILL SICK, CONTINUE TO BE SICK...SERIOUSLY AM I THE ONLY PERSON ON HERE WHO HAS BEEN SICK ALMOST THE ENTIRE TIME SINCE GETTING SLEEVED?

I was sleeved in Mexico on March 5th 2013. That puts me 11 wks post OP, give or take. I have lost over 50 lbs, I am 5 lbs from my goal weight of 145, I am 5' 6". (Yes, I was one of those, I weighed 201 lbs when sleeved. My BMI was 53.) I can only consume approximately 300 calories a day (more or less) or I will throw up (3 or 4 tablespoons of food ain't very much and everything makes me sick). I have only been able to gag down 40 ounces of Water A DAY tops until 2 days ago, 2 days ago, I got down 7 cups of water and maybe 500 calories. My blood work is good. Iron levels are great. I got to stop my HBP medicine, (which I have been on for years, very happy about that). There may be something going on with my kidneys, I'm hoping that my inability to drink water or eat is giving them nothing to do so at the risk of being EVEN sicker I am.... gagging and/or puking and/or throwing up and re drinking eating to try and make sure my kidneys have something to do so they test in the normal zone when retested this Tuesday....I love being thin, don't get me wrong....but when does the "sick" part stop....I have been assured that it does, I have been told I will enjoy food again, I have been told that I will be able to taste, and smell normally and will eat 1000 calories a day, but WHEN!!!!!!....it seems when I browse through the forums, that people can immediately eat anything they want right after surgery and it never effects them, they don't get sick, they just feel guilty.. sometimes I'm glad I'm so sick cuz then I know I WONT be eating too much....but I'm depressed, I'm tired, I'm weak and I have no strength or energy....seriously, 3 quarters of my life is spent with a headache and on the verge of nausea...any advice would be GREATLY appreciated, I did not read anywhere that I would be this sick for this long....I remember watching an episode of the Osbourne's once and Kelly told Sharon to eat something, Sharon replied "oh Kelly, you KNOW I get sick when I eat" I didn't know what she meant by that until I heard she had gastric bypass, THEN I knew...but I THOUGHT.... us sleevers were a different breed and could avoid the same crap as bypassers, was I wrong??? (P.S please don't just tell me to go to my doctor, as I indicated above, I already have) THANKS for your thoughts!!!!!! xo

What is a typical menu for you in a day? (It's hard to see what's making you sick when we don't know what you are eating...)

Are you adding a little Crystal Light or lemon juice to your Water to make it a bit more acidic? (sleevers report this helps alot).

Did you follow your Doc's guide lines on food progression? (started with Clear liquids, then progressed to full liquids, then to purees ONLY after your tummy was able to handle the full liquids without making you sick? Did you back down to full liquids after your tummy refused a certain puree and let it heal again before you started on purees again? Are you adding in only one new food every few days to see which food is making you sick?)

If you are really sick from what you are eating, perhaps it's best to back down to just full liquids for another week, and try again later with real foods, one at a time to see which is causing the issue.

Are you taking Vitamins and is your body handling those okay?

There is so many variables, but I hope someone can give you some good options to try because being sick that long doesn't sound right.

I'm SO sorry to hear that you are going through this. Has your surgeon specifically checked to make sure that you don't have a stricture? My next stop might be a gastroenterologist who has a subspecialty in treating patients who have had bariatric surgery and who is familiar with VSG. As an aside, I don't think you meant to say that your pre-op BMI was 53? It had to be lower at that weight and and height. But the main thing is, I hope that you get some answers--and relief--soon.

This must be so frustrating for you! I am so sorry that you are having such a rough time. My first thought is to find out if you are taking Prilosec or another proton-pump inhibitor? If not that would be the first thing I would try. The second thing is adding an anti-gas med like Phazyme or Gas-X. If I were in your shoes, I would back my diet up to post-op day one and start advancing as tolerated and very, very slowly. Make sure you are sipping, not gulping and chewing extra thoroughly! I like the other suggestion about seeing if you have a stricture or other GI obstruction. If you are this miserable and your doc isn't looking for the answer, maybe get a second opinion? Try not to compare yourself to others, each body heals differently and at a different speeds! I really hope you get to feeling better, make sure to keep us informed!.

I'm a little confused. You only needed to lose 55 lbs? If I am reading this right, you are the poster child for why you should only take the risk of this surgery if you are morbidly obese. In your case, the pain and discomfort you're in now wasn't worth it. No wonder you had to go to Mexico. I realize I'm not being helpful here to you, but I hope people who are considering this surgery to lose a relatively small amount of weight read this....

I'm sorry to hear that your are going through this. I would call my Nut and Surgeon.

ASAP. I am 12 weeks out too. And there is some foods that I don't tolerate. I get nauseated off some off certain foods. But to you follow up with professional help that is what they are there for to guide us to better health. We are here to support you.

I am sorry you are having so much trouble - I would recommend drinking Gatorade or something similar (don't worry about calories at the moment) and see if that helps. When I experienced that nausea that you describe I found that the Gatorade really helped.

I'm a little confused. You only needed to lose 55 lbs? If I am reading this right, you are the poster child for why you should only take the risk of this surgery if you are morbidly obese. In your case, the pain and discomfort you're in now wasn't worth it. No wonder you had to go to Mexico. I realize I'm not being helpful here to you, but I hope people who are considering this surgery to lose a relatively small amount of weight read this....

I agree this is not helpful and I disagree with the thought - I had a relatively smaller amount of weight to lose as well and I am glad I didn't wait to have this surgery. In addition, I remember the first few months after surgery having regret and being miserable - in pain, nausea anytime I ate, Constipation, etc - however, in my case, it was just a matter of adjusting to my new life.

What does your surgeon say? Personally I do not think this is normal.

Have you tried to get in to see one of the local bariatric surgeons? Did your pcp check to see if you are dehydrated? Stricture?

You can always go to the ER to be checked out. Figure out which one has Bariatrics on call. That is a back door way of seeing one of the bariatric surgeons quickly.

Totally disagree with this. At a 38 BMI, she was 8 BMI points above the Obesity range of 30. Plenty of people start there and end up morbidly obese within a matter of months or years. If it were so easy to take the weight off and keep it off without surgery, everyone would do that.

Also, new medical tools are looking at things such as how much abdominal obesity someone has rather than just the BMI. Comorbidities matter too--Cleveland Clinic is now covering bariatric surgery for people who have lower than a 35 BMI but have diabetes that isn't responding well to surgery. The first patient had a BMI of 33, was on insulin several times a day, and was OFF his insulin before he even left the hospital.

I agree that everyone needs to go into the surgery eyes wide open about possible complications--but it is up to the individual if he or she feels the risk of current obesity and possibly future morbid obesity is worth the trade off.

The words "only" and "55 pounds overweight" really shouldn't be used together. There is a lot of risk there.

I think the reaction some of may have had was were the orig poster said she had a bmi of 50. That was incorrect. I admit I had the same reaction, and wondered if she had made her decision to have surgery based on that incorrect info. However that has nothing to do with her current problem.

I was sleeved in Mexico with a couple friends of mine we all have the same problem I was sleeved on April 23 I can't hold anything down at all Popsicles that's all seriously I've seen 2 doctors and they both say I had a wonderful surgeon but I get grossed out big time with whatever I try I am not overwatering I can't even eat 2 tablespoons of anything

BTW at a 38 BMI, she would be covered by any major insurance carrier that covers bariatric surgery. So I don't understand the comment about "having" to go to Mexico based on the degree of obesity. Obviously people go to Mexico if they don't have insurance, don't want to use their insurance, or don't have insurance that covers bariatric surgery. But she wouldn't have been excluded based on those stats....

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
