Hello Everyone,

I'm one month post op and having trouble getting in all my Protein. I tried nectar and its too sweet for me, even after adding more Water. I also can't tolerate milk anymore so any suggestions will help.

Thanks.

OK - so I have been thinking about how to increase Protein up to the sweet spot of eating 1.5 g per 1 lb body weight. For me that is about 240 g Protein a day.

I get about 150 now and am eating 6 x s day heavily focused on 25-40 g protein a meal. Sometimes I sneak in an extra meal for 7 meals a day. My weight is slightly dropping about 3 lbs a week on this eating plan and lean muscle mass is increasing, but would definitely grow slightly if eating TDEE + 200 calories.

The big100 bars have 28-32 oz g protein per bar and about 400 calories each. It would be a way to also get calories closer to TDEE. Drinking 2 scoops instead of 1 scoop will help get 40-50 g protein per shake.

I never thought it would be so hard to eat enough. It might also help to eat smaller meals every waking hour (instead of every 3 hours).

Let's see, assuming awake for 15 hours then that works out to be 3 meals of 40 g (either big 100 bars or higher calorie shakes that are 32 oz or higher) and 9 meals of 15 g equaling 120 g + 130 g = 250 g of protein. That works out to be 250 x 4 cal/g = 1000 cal. Another 1200 calories would be split between good fats and carbs. Not sure how to play it out yet.

I think I am going to need some help with figuring how to eat 240 g protein daily with also eating the right amount of good carb and fats to total around 2300 calories.

My goal is to build up my body so want to eat about 2300 calories a day or 200 calories more then my TDEE of 2100.

I do workout 6 x a week. 3 days of intense lifting for about 45 minutes, 2 days of cross fit for an hour and 1 day of circuit training for 1 hour. The last day contains "easy" exercise that is not intense.

This is complicated and expensive. Phew. Help?

I am still only a few days out and on Clear Liquids with protein liquid so I am not at all knowledgable on the subject but was wondering, could you simple take a tablespoon of protein liquid? It tastes vile but it's packed with protein, no carbs and no sugar, no sorbitol and no fat. 2tbl has 15 grams of protein and 60 calories. Would be easy way to add straight protein. What do you think?

Is protein liquid different from the protein shots...what brand are you referring to that you'd take 2 tblsp?

Yes Protein Shots I guess. The one I am taking is from my doctor and it's called Proteinex P15 pre digested Liquid Protein. It tastes gross but it's easy to swallow down a tablespoon and chase with a little swallow of juice or crystal light or Gatorade

I wonder if you could mix it in a little juice or must it be taken straight?

I think it would be acceptable if you can stomache the taste and it is a high quality Protein shot. Usually those shots are made with the cheaper collagen protein. If you want some Protein Shake suggestions, let us know. There are many good ones, some that are better then others depending on when you consume it (morning, post workout or evening).

You can mix it with apple sauce or a beverage but it's strong tasting so I prefer to get it over with and just power it down.

Thanks! I already ordered sampler packs of chike, powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury, and Jay Robb Proteins to try and the PB2 and PB2 with chocolate. Not sure when I will be on Protein shakes but started to order a few different types. I saw you mentioned muscle milk light too from costco which I am a member of, so I will likely try them out too. Any others you suggest for early post op?

A lot of us, including myself, enjoy taking the Syntrax nectar brand of Protein Shakes. Furthermore, the nectar product is highly recommended by my WLS Center and they did a lot of research to pick the best brand to recommend to their patients. There are many many different flavors ranging from fruity to dessert. I tend to gravitate towards the sweet flavors because, hey, who can pass up a dessert tasting flavor like Oreo, Peanut Butter cup or vanilla bean. Oreo has been my personal favorite since before surgery. Peanut Butter cup can be made by mixing chocolate truffle with pb2. It can then be turned into a butter finger by mixing in sugar free butterscotch pudding. So yummy. There is also a product line called matrix Protein that are like the nectar set of products, but are made with a different formula involving a few different types of high quality Proteins. One of the benefits of the matrix line is it is a slower digesting protein shake which will keep you satisfied for 4-5 hours instead of 1-2 as with nectar line. For this reason, I switched from nectar to matrix product lines at month 4 to help with hunger issues. You can buy both Nectar and Matrix products online at Amazon and at mybariatricpantry.com. I have a hard time deciding if I like Oreo flavor more in the matrix line or the cake batter flavor in the muscle milk light line. If it helps your decision making process, my costco does not carry muscle milk light nor does it carry anything more exotic then vanilla or chocolate. In fact, the only place I could find cake batter muscle milk light is from Amazon. The usual local stores, including GNC, Vitamin Shoppe and Vitamin World, did not carry the cake batter muscle milk light cake batter protein tub. No worries for me or you if you have Amazon Prime membership. If you have Amazon Prime you can order and receive in 2-3 days with no shipping costs (love this about Amazon prime!). All of these protein product lines are suitable as post op options and it is really a matter of personal preference.

Awesome! Thanks so much. I will check out nectar and matrix too! I am dropping a lot of coin on sampling but that's ok. Will be happy to find what works best for me.

No problem. 3 scoops is 60 g of Protein for the GNC shakes. It is definitely over kill to try and consume 60 g of Protein as here is how it breaks down :

1. 15-20 g protein' date=' average amount for average adult to consume.

2. 20-25 g protein, average amount for WLS adult to consume.

3. 25-30 g protein, average amount for athletic adult to consume

Adults typically cannot process more then the upper values on these ranges above. Eating more will result in storage of protein or elimination, neither which are ideal.[/quote']

I met with a dietician yesterday and ask her if it was true you can not process more than 30g of protein at a time and she said that is not true especially with gastric sleeve patients.

I love the chocolate Muscle Milk! I have also bought the Cookies and cream but have not tried it yet. I am also going to be getting the cake batter since the compliments on here. Thanks for the suggestions.

Just asked my personal registered dietitian (aka mom), and she would not say a specific amount because she doesn't know. Her answer: it all depends on your hight and muscle mass. Ie. a body builder over 6' will metabolize way more than a petite, slender woman.

Also, IMHO, I do not take info from commercial sites to seriously. While they may give some good info, I think it wiser to see if a site like mayoclinic.org has an answer. Headed there now....

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
