Slightly controversial drink (wine, spirit, beer) poll

Recommended Posts

For those that are blessed by your surgeons or you renegades out there: what is the best post op drink you have experienced. Best is to be defined in your own terms. Maybe best means best taste or best intoxication effect. The answer lies in the eye of the beholder. This thread will not be about the merits of drinking ( eg whether it is "good" or "bad" for you). Also tell me about how often you drink or with whom you drink. The crazier the story the better, but this thread is open to any response as long as the simple conditions are met. Ok, it is not that controversial, but you read this far haven't you. :)

I will start first. My favorite post op drink is a dangerous Dave from Dave's BBQ or a long island ice tea from somewhere else. Why? It tastes good to me and feels like a real drink. I can usually just have 1 before walking is a little challenge. i try to order two, but cannot make it one or two sips until it is too much (sleeve says so) and it is a waste, so i stick with one. I usually have a drink about every 2 weeks and sometimes it is just an apple martini or it might be some white wine if I am out with my wife at a nice dinner. I do not drink beer. not sure why. i have just never really liked it, ever. I like to grab the occasional spirit with my brother as we shoot the breeze on a weekend. Sorry it is not a crazy story, but now it is your turn.

I love moscato and margaritas on the rocks.

I drink maybe a drink or two once a month. I am a year out so there have been a time or two when I have drank quite a few past my limits. I don't like to drink very often because the whole transfer I addictions, and because I usually want to eat after a night out.

Apple juice and vodka.

Apple martini - awesome. I use apple schnapps , but I think apple juice would be a little better for a person, no?

Good thinking to not get carried away during the weight loss phase. I agree. Mixed drinks do add calories that may interfere with loss. I guess it also depends on if you work it off or not. My first drink was near the tail end of weight loss (1 month to go back in jan 2013), so I conscientiously decided not to drink during weight loss phase. I also wanted to wait until post op 6 months to be blessed by surgeon as far as ulcer potential goes.

Moscatos are tasty (remembering from pre op when in Rome). They are kind of lighter then a typical wine and a little sparkly. Did you find your sleeve ok with the sparkle of bubbles?

chocolate martini - I will have maybe a couple a month. It's like a dessert with a kick. Like one of you said, I chose to have nothing alcoholic until I reached goal.

I love Moscato (you can get it without the fizzies too!) and muscadine wine that I can only find in Arkansas. My sister has a friend that brings us back a case at the time when we need it. I also have a little winery near my house where you can get red wines made with blueberries and pomegrantes. Those are pretty yummy as well and are semi great for you if you are looking at the antioxidant content of them. I haven't had any alcohol since surgery. I'm not a big drinker anyway but I was told that I needed to wait at least a year after surgery before alcohol. I'm trying to be a "good patient" and do what I'm told plus I don't want to do anything to throw off my weight loss so I think I'll be waiting a while. I would LOVE a good margarita too!

Good suggestion and good job at waiting according to your surgeon. Oh my, 1 year is a long time if you enjoy having the occasional drink. I hope you stay strong and make it to 1 year!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
