I'm considering Dr. Kuri. Thoughts????

Recommended Posts

I got my first band with Dr. Kuri. He was very nice and I was extremely pleased with everything. I couldn't belive what a "breeze" the whole thing was! I had my surgery at his old hospital. He is in a nice new hospital now so it will probably be even better. The hospital I was in only had about 12 patient rooms! I ended up getting rebanded this past summer in Dallas. My band slipped. Dr, Kuri agreed to try to fix it, but a few days laterhe had a consultant contact me. I had to get back in touch with him and he told me that he looked at my x-rays and talked it over with the other surgeons and they agree that they didn't want to try to fix my band. I was at my goal weight that I wrote down on his paperwork and he said I should have learned better eating habits by then. I was a bit disappointed in him over that. He knows that people who get banded can't rely on "eating habits" to lose or maintain weight. If that were the case I wouldn't have had to get a band to begin with. I felt like I got "brushed off" because I was at my goal weight. He was nice about the whole thing and he is very nice in person too. I sm not trying to say anything negative at all. I am just sharing my story. I think he is a great doctor and if you use him I am sure you will do fine.

Getting rebanded is not the norm. If it was, I wouldn't have gotten banded to begin with. Although, obviously, I would do it all over again. I am happier with myself than I have ever been in my life! My band slipped. I got banded with Dr. Kuri on 4/14/05 and in 1/06 I felt something really weird, but not painful. I went to my fill doctor and my band had moved just a tad. I kept getting my fills adjusted up and down (mostly unfills) until one day in 5/06 I realized that I could have eaten an entire plate at a mexican restaurant. I went to get a fill and the reason that I could eat so much was because my pouch was HUGE! Even if I had been as tight as I could get it wouldn't have helped because my pouch was so big. The bottom part of my stomach that was supposed to be below the band had partially slipped up through the band. My new surgeon called it a "prolapse". There is no way to know for sure, but I PB'd just about every time I ate. I am assuming that is what caused the slip. I know now that I was really too tight, but at the time I just wanted to lose weight and I knew that I shouldn't be doing that, but I just wanted to be thin! I never thought anything that serious would ever happen to me. So, please listen to me before you even get banded. If you have problems keeping food down, get an unfill. Don't fight it and risk having a slip! I talk to people all the time in the doctor's offices that tell me that they throw up all the time and they have had no problems with slips. I then tell them to be careful and explain what happened to me. Everyone is different. I don't like advertising how stupid I was to do that to myself, but I don't want others to go through the same thing. Hope this helps. If you follow the "band rules" I am sure you will do great!

I'm a happy Dr Kuri patient, too. And I had the surgery at the old hospital. I can't speak for aftercare, as I haven't been back. I would, but he's clear on the other side of the US! (I'm in NC). Anyhow, he's an excellent band surgeon. Tons of experience and a kind man. Make sure you have a local band doc who will see you and fill you. Unless you plan to go back regularly. My sister plans to be banded by him, sometime soon...and I'll go with her and get an endoscope while I'm there. I have been banded 20 months now. I'll show my sig so you can see my stats. Anyhow, no regrets about Kuri. Good luck!

I had my surgery on June 1, 2006 with Dr. Kuri. His new hospital is gorgeous! I have nothing but positive things to say about the entire experience. I returned to him for my first fill and again nothing but kindness... he has that gentle look and feel about him and I would encourage anyone considering the band to go to him. Everything with him is so planned out too, from the ride across the border to the ride back to the USA, everything was written down. I wish I could find a kind Dr. like that in the US.

I even had a "breakdown" a few months ago when weight loss stopped and he called me! Dr. Kuri.. not his nurse.. not someone on his team.. but the actual Dr. He was able to calm me down quickly.

Banded by Dr. Kuri in 2003. He was great. I went back to him for 3 more fills then found a Dr closer to me. But i'm thinking of going back to him for a slight unfill and and endescope to check things out. Just in case.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
