So many Dr's in Mexico!…help!

Recommended Posts

So I know I need to go to Mexico to have my surgery now, it is not working out with my insurance, I am sooooo overwhelmed by all the different Doctor choices! There are sooo many different choices, and I have heard some of them have contravertial reviews… I know for sure I do NOT want to be at a place where you stay in a recovery house, that would be crazy, I can not sleep with people around at all (I'm already worried about sleep in the hospital!) But I would like somewhere that you stay in the hospital a day or two then stay at a hotel. I will also be bringing my husband with me so knowing he would have a place to sleep would be wonderful! I also am looking for the lowest cost possible, I have seen a few that are about 8500 and that is just not an option for me right now. Thanks for any help!!!

I had a great experience with booking with Dr's cabrera and Valenzuela through Mexico Bariatric center. The surgery was at MiDoctor hospital. I stayed two nights post op there. If you have someone with you, they'll give you a big room and a second bed for no extra charge.. After surgery you go to the Marriott for two days. I booked an extra day just to be sure I'd be good for the long flight home. The doctors were fabulous and they have a third doctor now Dr Guillermo Garcia who is in the surgery room and does a lot of the regular follow ups. I completely trusted this surgical team and I had a quick surgery and fantastic recovery. I think the price is 4700 now. They are one of the cheaper teams but they're well trained young doctors.

Dr Fernando Garcia did my sleeve 10 days ago at Florence/oasis hospital in Tijuana. Two nights hospital, two night at the Mariott. Hospital rooms at florence have a double bed for a companion. Really big rooms. Price $4700 includes everything but your airplane ticket and tips for driver and hotel staff. I'm very happy with my experience!

My recommendation would be to check out dr. Ponce de leon. He operates out of the INT hospital in TJ Mexico.

I will be the first to admit, I am a bit partial to him & Trish. They took great care of me. There are many highly qualified surgeons in Mexico, & I don't regularly give recommendations, but with what you said you wanted, I believe Dr. ponce de leon best fits what you want. Granted, he is not the lowest priced surgeon in Mexico, but his rate is more than fair.

One thing you need to consider is your coordinator. Trish is the only one I know that is actually there when you arrive, helps you get settled in, makes sure you are well served while you are in Mexico, and even checks on you after you get home (I still hear from her after 11 months).

With Dr. Ponce de Leon, you can expect, a highly competent surgeon, 2nights in the INT Hospital, 1 night in the Lucerna hotel (2nd nights are available if requested), the nicest resort hotel in TJ. And don't forget, Trish, she makes this whole thing so much easier. Last I checked his rate was still $5500.

I just read some other things saying that Dr. Garcia does surgeries at Mi hospital, which is more like a strip mall, or a very small and old hospital, does someone who has had surgery know if this is true?

I thought so because I have seen pictures and it looks like a hospital

Mi Doctor Hospital is a full service 3 story hospital. They also have an ICU if needed. Dr Fernando Garcia, who did my surgery, operates out of this hospital. Careful because there is another Dr Garcia, as mentioned here. Dr Fernando Garcia is an amazingly skilled surgeon, has performed over 4 thousand surgeries and completed my revision. I had no real pain, no gas and was very well cared for. I have had no complications, have exceeded my goal weight and am thrilled with my outcome. If you want any further information don't hesitate to PM me. He also is very reasonable so you can't go wrong if price is a concern.

I went with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. He is a bit higher in cost than most. I think he was worth every penny.

I was originally going to go to TJ and have my surgery at Mi Doctor. It is not run out of a strip mall, that would be Jerusalem Hospital, but it is not quite a fully operational hospital. Ie. there is no ER. Babies aren't born there... More like a specialty center? I changed my mind b/c my heart acts up and will flip into unpleasant and sometimes potentially dangerous rhythms. I was concerned Mi Doctor wasn't equipped to handle it, especially if I was in a hotel.

As it turns out my heart did act up and Almater Hospital and Dr. Aceves' team were all over and got me on track.

That said, I'm sure if you talk to enough people on the forum you will get great feedback and experiences regarding many surgeons and options. Just make the decision that sits well with you and your hubby.

Mi Doctor is NOT the hospital in the strip mall. Mi is a small hospital with just four floors. The hospital itself is not old, but some of the equipment is on the older side.. Like the EKG machine is older but in good working order. Here is a youtube video from Medicaltourismco.. it shows very accurately what MiDoctor looks like

You'll see clearly that it is small.. the ICU is just one bed (cuz really it's rarely needed)

The hospital you are thinking of is Jerusalem Hospital and it is NOT a hospital, and is indeed a clinic in a strip mall.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
