Pain with vsg and hernia repair

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I had my surgery the 27th. The doc also fixed a hernia while he was at it. I was wondering about anyone else's experience with the vsg /hernia combo. Im awfully sore and area around my belly button is quite bruised. Im also struggling with gas pain/ rumbles.

I had the same thing. My right side incision was the one that bothered me. Around day 6 you should start feeling way better. Hang in there. The first week is rough.

Mine is a non-hernia repair, and the one by my belly button is bruised as well. My right side still hurts, but it is better every day.

So it's not just you guys!

That's good to hear. I was mainly curious to find similarities/differences between straight vsg and vsg plus hernia repair. Thanks for weighing in.

I am two weeks out and had it done. Rumblings still here. Bruised in 3 areas and still some burning pain. Doc said (today at my appt) it's all normal.

Are you talking about hiatal hernias? Very common in obese people but not the same as an abdominal hernia. They are a tear or bulging where the esophagus goes through the diaphragm to the stomach. I was told for a decade that I had acid reflux but it was actually a hiatal hernia which my surgeon also repaired with my sleeve.

Thanks to pre-op testing (Sleeved 10/11/12), I found I had 3 hernias (pop 'n fresh dough-girl, am I!) - hiatal, ventral (belly) and the 3rd by my c-section incision! The hiatal was repaired during the sleeve and I think my discomfort was more from the hernia repair than the stomach surgery! Twisting, bending and reaching was out for at least 3 weeks. I tried to return to work to soon and the pain from moving too much too soon sent me back to bed for another week! Tylenol worked wonders - better than the narcotic meds prescribed by my surgeon. Good luck - you'll feel great soon!

Hi, I also had the hiatal hernia repair with my sleeve. I was sleeved 5/15 and am still on pain meds & having quite a bit of abdominal pain.

Everyone keeps telling me it will get better, I sure hope so.

Feel free to send me a private message if you want to talk more.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
