Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

Just thought I wold check in and say hi! Not much going on here. My unfill has been bliss!! I am getting much less reflux, and am not having trouble eating now. I am hoping to set up a fill after Thanksgiving, and if I need another, just before Christmas, because we will have a 5 hour layover in Denver on our way to my Mom's for Christmas. I haven't been gaining at all, just playing around with the same few pounds, but I didn't expect to lose with the unfill. I am just grateful that it is so much easier to eat now, but I need to reign it in so I don't get carried away  . I hope you are all doing well, and maybe someday my fills will sync up with you guys so I can come to RR sometime too!

I don't know how the challenges go.... but i am banded now... so sure:thumbup:

First off.... Congrats on your banding.

For the challenge, you would weigh yourself on Friday (the beginning of the challenge) then every Friday after that. Post how much you lost and I'll keep track.

Just let me know how much you want to lose by the end of the challenge.

Julie, its a good thing we had that pizza the other night - I have some major restriction now and pizza is not in my future for now! I went from 4 ccs to 6 ccs. Really feeling it!

Thanks again for a fun dinner!

Yayyyyyy... restriction is good. And that pizza was soooooo good. :smile2: I think I'll eat the rest of it for dinner tonight (I ate my leftovers from Monday afternoon for lunch.... I'm up to Monday night's leftovers now :frown:)

I'm not sure if you told me how much you wanted for this challenge. Sorry if you did, I am such an airhead right now.

Hi All,

It's been awhile... like 20 plus pounds (in the wrong direction)... Haven't seen Dr. K in over a year... I am glad to see I still recognize some folks...many new ones I do not know, but that's okay.

I see you all have a Challenge starting Friday. Could I join and sign up for 10? (Think big, start small...or is that think small and start small?)

Hey Tina!

Wow! I haven't seen you here for a very long time! How are they kidlings? I bet they have really grown. I remember meeting you and the kids at the reunion bbq last summer. How have you been? It's so good to see you! I've been good. I haven't had a fill in almost a year. I'm preparing to go for the first phase of my plastic surgery in 27 days. I'm excited. I hope everything works out. I am getting a Tummy Tuck (extended) and a Brachioplasty! Don't be such a stranger!:smile2:

I'm glad you're doing better. Wow! I can't imagine not having anything in my band. I hope I do as well as you. You must be very diligent to watch what you eat. how's the Nanny job going? How's hubby? I remember having such bad indigestion during my pregnancy, I felt I was dying every night. I vomited for 9 months and gained a total of 8lbs. My poor daughter! No wonder she was only 5lbs 10 oz when she was born! Once I had her, the indigestion left immediately and I was able to eat normally. I felt like was a new person! It was wonderful! I think I gained 40lbs breastfeeding AND eating! I'd love to meet you at RR. I am sad I missed Deb's trip! Take care!

The kids are great and growing... Daughter is now 4.5 and my son, 2.5. We are potty training him... he stays dry most days (I can see the light at the end of the diaper tunnel)! My boy is still a peanut, just now moving into size 18 mos... but right on target in all areas... We've had a busy year...sold my house, bought a new one...changed jobs and all... My mom moved here from VT a month ago, lives 3 miles down the road. Life is good...

Well, I wish you well on the Tummy Tuck and arm lift... That's totally awesome!

Actually he didn't remove all of it, just about 5 or 6 cc's. Butit made such a huge difference! Nannying is going great! And we love the new place. DH is still struggling with the knee thing, and I am starting to think about just sendind out his medical records to different doctors and explaining the situation, and hoping someone will pick him up for replacement surgery. I hope when I get pregnant I won't have anything that bad. Fingers crossed!!! How are things going for you?

15 is doable, especially when you are only a couple of weeks out. That is pretty much 2 pounds a week.

I'll put you down for 15.

Theresa and Julie:

It was so great to see both of you at dinner the other night. Hell, we not only closed the place, those poor kids had to stay an hour after closing!:) I had no idea of the time.

Theresa: Thanks sooo much for spending Thursday with me. The trip to Blackhawk was beautiful and the casino was great fun! As we discussed, maybe the next time I come into town, we can go on the day I get in and spend the evening up there (not overnight, just into the evening...we want to have enough time to lose ALL our money you know!:cursing:).

Thanks again.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
