I, after many painful years of wondering and worrying, was finally diagnosed with PCOS in December of last year. I'm 29 (I will be 30 in August). Weight has been an issue my entire life. I also had my first cyst rupture when I was 12. I got pregnant with my first child 5 months after I turned 20 and the weight really packed on then. Had her Sept of 2004. Then I had my son in August of 2006. I had my tubes tied at that time (fullishly) and my periods seemed semi normal. No crazy irregular bleeding, my cramps had basically disappeared, it was amazing. Then in 2010 I started getting the sharp pains in my lower belly, bleeding became a force to recon with, and I suddenly became too moody for words. (Ohhhh I forgot to mention that in 2009 I lost a ton of weight using those special little crack pills from the doctor. I went from right about 240 to 191 in about 5 months) Ok, so Decemeber 2010 I was miserable. One doctor thought it was endometriosis and sent me to a specialist who told me the only way to know for sure was to do surgery. I said ok, well while your in there just untie my tubes as well. I was getting remarried and my current husband has no children of his own. Feb 2011, exactly 6 weeks before my wedding, I went in for a 6 hour surgery. Woke up, tubes are open great, no endometriosis, oh and we cleaned about 19 cysts of your ovaries, but we STILL don't know what's wrong with you....

Time went on and things only got worse. I would bleed to the point of passing out. I would miss work because of cramps and still no answers. UNTIL I went to this amazing doctor. He did one ultrasound, said you have a 5" cyst (yes that says 5 inch) on your left side and atleast 5 small ones on your right side. You have PCOS. Here's some metformin and birth control. And whala pain is gone, bleeding has stopped, now to fix my weight.... I gained 100lbs from Jan 2010 to now and most of it I contribute to PCOS. I'm uncomfortable, unhappy, unhealthy, and still have not been able to conceive with my new hubby. I'm sooooo ready for my life and my body back.

Hey there, I have PCOS as well. If you go to the special interest tab, there is a category for PCOS. I suggest checking that out. I found it super helpful before my surgery as there are many women on there with great success stories concerning the sleeve and PCOS. :)

I have PCOS... and Hypothyroidism... I feel like this surgery has been my saving grace with my weight... Before no matter what I did I could not for the life of me lose weight, I am very fit, even at my heaviest weight. With the amount of time I used to spend in the gym I should have lost the weight on my own. It was the PCOS and Hypothyroidism. I have the Mirena IUD so that helps with my periods (I don't get them at all) and hopefully losing weight will help me concieve another baby. It took my DH and I 2 years and 2 miscarrages to convieve our son and then after trying for baby #2 for a year with 2 miscarriages and no success, I decided it was time to do something more. Thats when I decided to stop trying to concive, I saw my surgeon July of 2012, got Mirena (to prevent unplanned pregnancy durning weightloss) Aug 2012, then got my Sleeve done 12.12.2012... I am down over 50lbs and I couldn't be happier!!! In March of next year I am going to have my Mirena taken out and see what happens with my cycles for a few months and begin charting and temping while using condoms, then if all goes well in June DH and I will hopefully start trying and FINALLY I will get pregnancy with baby #2...With my surgeons and OBGYNS blessing to try at 18 months out! But this surgery has been awesome!

Sorry for writing a novel!

I also have PCOS - quite mild but I've been on the pill since I was 16 for that reason as well as not wanting to get pregnant. I'm hoping VSG will reverse it. My endo has just asked me to switch to Minera IUD from the pill because of the increased fertility caused by bariatric surgery and her concern that the pill might not be absorbed perfectly (despite it not being a malabsortive procedure) . I understand it will be painful and I'm terrified for my appt. next week.

There are two types of PCOS. Don't let any doctor fool you there is one type from being over weight. As fat produces estrogen, estrogen produces fat.....but you can have PCOS when being in a healthy weight range. Is this something you have always had or just as your gained weight?

I have PCOS it was all blamed on me being over weight. I still have Migraines I don't have a regular period ( I also have a mirena IUD) so I don't know if it just me or the IUD. I did stop growing facial hair for the past year while I lost the bulk of my weight but it has started back up again recently.

I don't want to discourage you at all but There is great control of PCOS symptoms with food. I have to stay away from refined sugars and that helps my symptoms a lot.

I didn't know that obesity could cause PCOS.. I was initally diagnosed with PCOS when I was 19... I still haden't gotten my period so we went to the drs and they had no answers so then I was refered to my reproductive endocronoligist and he diagnosed me with PCOS... I was in a healthy weight, he said I probably have had it forever, he also believes it is herditary (apperently some drs will argue this) My mom cousin and sister all have it and on my dads side 2 of my aunts have it and they beilieve my cousin has it as well...

Don't be afraid, Mirena is AWESOME! I am not going to lie, the insert hurts but it is literally momentary pain, then for a few days following I had period like cramps then I was fine! Personally I love the freedom of Mirena... I always forgot to take BC pills with my Mirena I dont even have to think about it... I don't even do self checks, DH swears he can feel the strings when we... But I donno... I know it is still there and in position bc I just went to my biannual OBGYN appt and they did a quick ultrasound to check the placement.

So with pcos does the pill in some cases fix symptoms? Sorry if its a dumb question, I'm trying to self diagnose cos I hate doctors at the moment!

Some people have very minimal discomfort. For me, it was the WORST pain of my life- no joke. I've had a tonsillectomy, two csections, vsg with gall bladder, and I've also broke my back in three different places. The insertion of the mirena was horrible. My uterus is shaped oddly and the doc kept getting blocked. It took three tries. I also have a TINY cervix. I had it placed the day after valentines and I'm still spotting. The cramps were horrendous for the first three weeks. Do your research and make sure that this is what you really want.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
