Cholesterol seven months out

Recommended Posts

So I'm feeling super great and have finally got into the workout mode, had my surgery July 18. Than......I get my six month test results back (had them done a little late) my cholesterol is super high. I had an appointment with my primary doctor who tested me on August 20 th and than last week. All cholesterol good and bad numbers were bad, no problem in August. I told him that I'm eating mostly Protein to lose weight. Of course he said that is the problem and put me on meds.

Does anyone else have high cholesterol since surgery? Never had this problem when I was fat, Lol. Now go figure with 101 lbs down since surgery! Help any suggestions?

Yep, mine has been steadily climbing since surgery (July 17th, right ahead of you!) and no one has a good reason for it. I have not been put on meds yet but i am terrified of what my PCP will say/do at my next lab check. That happens in April....

What has your diet been like? Are you eating lean Protein and green veggies and still see a high cholesterol? Can you identify any food that you have eaten that may contribute to it? For e ample, eggs, cheese, fatty Proteins, etc. You might also think about some detoxing drinks or some pharmaceutical meds. Hope you are able to identify what food might be contributing to your high cholesterol.

Well now that you mention it I eat an 1 egg and 1 slice of 45 cal Sargento cheese for Breakfast, most days. lunch usually small chili ( hamburger meat) or lean ham lunchmeat with lettuce and a tablespoon of chicken salad. dinner small salad, talipia, salmon or pork lion, chicken, ribeye, usually no more than 3 ounces. I know I need more veggies, but never have been big on veggies. I drink crystal light throughout the day and two cups of coffee in the am.

Interesting topic because I'm reading Gary Taube's book right now and cholesterol is one of the main topics. Specifically, how there has never been any proof associating high blood cholesterol or high fat diets with higher mortality rates or higher heart disease. But certain pharmaceutical companies made that leap when they first developed statins because it made their drugs look like life savers, and certain government officials jumped all over the idea without any scientific proof...and thus the myth was born that has continued to shape medical doctrine to this day.

At least, that's what the book is about. Another great example of this is the food pyramid. Remember that thing that told us to eat 11 servings a day of starches to stay healthy? Yeah, same thing.

Great point! I need to read that book, sounds real insightful. Has your cholesterol been ok? You have done fantastic with the sleeve. Congrats:)

Those cholesterol meds kill your liver! Your liver is already stressed enough processing all the fat that you are losing. If you are worried about your cholesterol then eat leaner meat, and less beef or pork. Some shell fish are really high in cholesterol as well, like shrimp.....very high. Make sure to eat a lot of high Fiber veggies, it helps lower as well. I am serious about those meds...read all of the warnings for them. There are reasons why they need to do liver tests before you take them, and while you are taking them. They also have no proof that they will actually prevent anything. My cholesterol has never been lower since surgery btw. I have dropped major points. Good luck!

My HDL is in the proper range. My LDL is a tad high. And my doc looked me straight in the face and said it's a non issue.

I am 4 months out, just had my blood done, everything came out good, cholesterol is way lower than it had been before surgery, but now I am low on Vitamin D. I think it's just because I am very anti-sun. At any rate, I am definately more Protein geared now than I was before surgery, and my cholesterol levels have gone down.

Thanks for your input, I'm low on Vitamin D also, even though I take an over the counter vitamin D nightly. Would you please share a daily menu with me?

Very good points. I'm going to hold off and fix the diet as you suggest. Totally cutting out all but lean Protein.

Livinglifeout, My diet on an average day goes wake up, have a premixed Protein Shake. I drink Rockin Refuel Muscle builder, 190 calories, 30g Protein. Then for lunch, I try to stick with only solid protein. Today, I went to an Italian restaurant with clients, and had an antipasta platter for lunch, so I had some procuitto, some mortadella, and salami, pecorino, asiago, and motzarella. I had about 1/2 a slice of each of meat and about 2 bites of each cheese. I also ate 4 olives, and a small piece of bread about 1/4 the size of my fist with some olive oil. Typically I only have protein though, like left over steak, or roast chicken. I can eat about 3-4 ounces of solid protein for lunch before I am full typically. If I have a snack, I will usually have beef Jerky or sandwich meat. For dinner tonight I am having coq au vin (chicken) and I might have a few tablespoons or 1/4 of a cup of rice with it. I am usually around 700-800 calories in a day. I usually have solid protein and veggies for dinner. I track on MyFitnessPal, my username is 920amy if you use MyFitnessPal feel free to add me!

Did you fast for 12 hours before the test ?? Consider retesting! I'm a RN in a clinic and if it's significantly higher after major weight loss I would recommended testing again, especially considering your doc wants to put you on meds. It could have been a fluke, it happens more than people think. Just my opinion.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
