Resting metabolic rate

Recommended Posts

Do your docs test your resting metabolic rate for you? Mine does- I breathed into a machine foe a little over 10 minutes and with that information he was able to tell me approximately how many calories I burn in a day (with no additional exercise). We did it before surgery and at six weeks. The first time it recorded that my metabolism is very high. That surprised me considering I am so overweight, but when I look back at how many calories I normally took in, maybe not so surprising. Anyway, at six weeks I had lost 37 pounds and my metabolism was still in the " high" range, but had dropped some since the beginning. He wants me to start getting some type of regular exercise in so that my metabolism will stop slowing and hopefully stay steady, and in theory, let me continue to have a pretty good rate of weight loss. I'm just curious what others' experience is with this type of testing.

My doc had me breathe in the tube, too- I think it came out to 2835 pre-op? I haven't had it re-tested since surgery though. I was shocked when I saw the number.

I am happy to hear that your DR. does this as a standard practice. The surgical center where I go has it available but they do not make it a part of the regular protocol. I am a big fan of having as much scientific information as we can in order to make better decisions for our nutrition and exercise needs.

I didn't even know that test existed. It's something I really want to look into. Thanks for the info.

Why dread it? It's EASY and painless. And it's great information to have!

Mine tested very high both before surgery and at goal. I'm having a hard time taking in enough calories to maintain, believe it or not.

Don't dread it, knowledge is power! And I'm also asthmatic and was sleeved Dec. 3rd. It's not hard breathing, it's just natural breathing at rest (sitting in a chair).

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
