I had already asked for wheelchair assistance for the flight home when I booked my ticket' date=' so when I got to the airport in San Diego, I just told one of the outside check-in people for my airline that I had requested wheelchair service and he sent another person inside to get the wheelchair. It took just a minute. I needed my boarding pass, so he wheeled me up to the ticket counter first and that all went as normal, except she also asked if I was able to walk to my seat on the airplane by myself and I told her I was. Then, I got wheeled to the security check-in and that was kind of nice because I got wheeled past the long line of people up to the line for First Class people which only had 1 person in front of me. They asked me if I was able to stand for long enough to do the body scan, so I did that, but no one reminded me to take the liquids out of my bag, so after my stuff was x-rayed, the TSA people had to open my bag, take the liquids out, then x-ray my bag and the liquids again separately. By the way, in the bag of things that A Lighter Me gives you when you get out of the hospital that includes your antibiotics and pain meds, they also give you a 12 or 16 oz bottle of liquid medicine to settle your stomach (it's basically milk of magnesia), but since you're not allowed to bring a bottle of liquid that large on an airplane (you can if you check your bag, but not in a carry-on), I left it behind in the hotel. I had never opened that medicine because I went to a pharmacy and bought a PPI instead. After I got through the security check-in, I got wheeled to my gate and I tipped the guy that wheeled me through the airport 5. He left me in the wheelchair and I only had to wait less than 5 minutes before a woman who worked for the airline came up to me and asked if I was ready to board the plane--this was before they announced boarding for anybody. She wheeled me along the ramp that led up to the plane, then she asked me if I was okay to walk to my seat by myself, which I did--it was nice being the first passenger on the plane. When my flight arrived in Seattle, I got off the plane like normal, but as soon as I got outside the plane, there was someone waiting on the ramp with a wheelchair with my name on it. He wheeled me from the plane to where I asked him to take me (outside, to arrivals where my friend picked me up). My friend wasn't there when we got outside, so the guy said that he would wait 5-7 minutes with me. I didn't time it, but he waited at least 5 minutes with me in the cold before my friend showed up. I also tipped this wheelchair driver 5. I highly recommend using the wheelchair service.[/quote']

How long did it take for you to cross the border bk to San Diego?

It's a facial treatment that removed dead skin cells so the face is brighter and looks more even if you have any acne spots or discoloration.

I really want to have something like that done when I am there. How much is it if you don't mind saying? And where do you get it done that? Also how do you find out about this kind of stuff or research it? Sorry for the 20 questions. I just put so much time into researching in to picking my doctor and hospital. Now I have been seen lots of information on face peels glow peels Botox etc.

Wow seems like you have had a great trip from start to finish. I am so very grateful for the great detail you give every time we talk/post. What is a PPI? How's your cold doing?

PPI stands for proton pump inhibitor and it is basically a class of medications, such as Prevacid, that prevent the release of acid in the stomach and intestines. They are recommended for many people for at least 3 months after WLS. You may have read lots of posts in the forums about people who feel like they're starving within a few days after surgery and many people reply that it's probably due to acid in the stomach and not hunger at all and that taking a PPI helps. I have been taking it since I got out of the hospital and I haven't really felt hungry at all since they allowed me fluids after surgery. I have had a little bit of head hunger--mainly wanting to chew something since I've been on liquids for so long, but it's been pretty minor and SF pudding seems to help.

My cold is better, but I'm definitely ready for it to be gone--thanks for asking.

That's a good question and I'm not exactly sure because there was another patient in the van (who was there for another procedure) and we had to run some errands for her before we went to the border. Also, I tried to nap a little in the van because of my cold. Once you're actually in the line leading up to the border, though, there are lots of vendors trying to sell all sorts of goods and foods and it seemed like that part took at least 30 min.

It was 130.00 and it was done at Dr. Ortiz office. They also have Dental there. My mom needed it and when I booked my surgery the coordinator said they didn't do dental procedures there anymore and referred me elsewhere. Something was fishy about that. But they sent me an email about all their cosmetic procedures and the peel seemed like a good one. I also asked around on here if anyone had done this.

Ok Thanks. Great to know. Can u tell me about the antibiotics or any other pills that you had or have to take? I am really worried about the size of some of the pill. I have always had a problem swallowing big pills. I have always taken chewable Vitamins and Calcium. I heard somebody post about how big the antibiotics were. I'm also worried about the pain medication. There is only one kind of pain medication that I can take that will not make me extremely ill and that is Demerol with a side of nausea medicine LOL. I hope u had somebody that was as good to u as u r 2 me about answering all your questions. I am truly grateful for you. So glad your cold is getting better.

In my opinion, the antibiotics aren't that big--about the size of a Tylenol caplet. There is no problem with it fitting in the sleeve, but I understand that you are saying that you have a problem swallowing pills. The pain medicine is an anti-inflammatory (Toradol is the American name), actually, and it worked much better for my pain than codeine, which I tried one day. The ones you are given to take with you are sublingual (dissolve under the tongue) and they're small.

Hopefully this works...trying to post my MX photos. The first bunch should be of the hotel room, then the hotel lobby, then the hospital room, then Dr. Ortiz, Eduardo (patient coordinator), and Abraham (driver).

The Marriott was beautiful. My mother didn't enjoy their Buffet but the chicken broth wasn't bad. It was a great experience overall. I was Dr. A Ortiz. I forgot to take pics if the clinic. It was beautiful as well.

Is a glow peel painful? I was considering this while in Mexico for my sleeve, but I don't want to feel overwhelmed with pain from the surgery as well as a peel.

No not painful at all. People advised that I shouldn't do after surgery but it was fine. No big deal it lasted about 20min. But now 2 days later my face is peeling bad but that's what it's supposed to do. It's hard for me not to pick at it. I hope by Monday it will be done peeling bcuz I have to go bk to work lol.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
