Pardon my bluntness...

Goodness' date=' people certainly are taking this personally.

Contrary to what someone inferred, I'm not trying to belittle anyone. I'm genuinely flabbergasted by the behavior I've seen and trying to comprehend why it happens so often. It's probably the engineer in me, always trying to solve problems. I understand the temptations people have, I have them myself. I was stuck at a stoplight in front of a KFC today and my mouth was watering because I smelled the Colonel's secret recipe of eleven herbs and spices. I swear, that chicken smelled like the most delicious thing on the planet. My pre-op diet is kicking my ass and I know for sure the post-op diet will be even worse as my surgeon has an extremely conservative post-op regimen.

Cravings themselves are not the issue. I'm not criticizing anyone for having cravings or temptations, that would be incredibly hypocritical. I completely sympathize with folks who start threads looking for help because they're craving something. That's not what this is about. What I'm having difficulty understanding is this; why do people seek approval from what are basically complete strangers to violate their doctor's directives, when they know it's not in their best interest? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Quite frankly, I'm shocked that people are getting out the torches and pitchforks over this. Perhaps instead of lashing out at me because I touched a nerve, we should figure out why this happens so often and see what can be done about it? That would be support, wouldn't it?[/quote']

This is more than cravings people..your body is shocked and starving!..we are fighting our bodies instinct to survive. Especially early out..it is starvation..its not easy to do the opposite of what your body is fighting to do...that is now whacko., you body doesn't know the surgeons rules..so this isn't a person failing at a diet..it giving in to their bodies needs

Their body does not need popcorn any more than my body does. That's a nice cop-out but the docs aren't prescribing so little food that you are going to die. No one "needs" a cookie to survive. You do have foods you are allowed which can sustain your life quite well.

Perhaps it was your last two sentences that didn't sit right with people. An addict of any kind knows what they are doing is harmful but they do it anyway. Maybe take that into consideration before you question someone's intelligence.

I'm not questioning anyone's intelligence. Please don't put words in my mouth.

"Are people really lacking that much basic common sense..." Sorry, but that was in your original post...

Common sense and intelligence are two different things. You can still be a rocket scientist and lack common sense. Or you could be Sarah Palin and lack both...

To the OP: I am so totally with you on this. I can not understand how anyone can have this surgery and post some of the things I read:

I am starving

I can't take another day of mushies

I ate ______ fill in the blank with a mirade of inappropriate foods.

How will they ever be successful without any self control? Why did they get the surgery in the first place? It is NOT a magic pill it is a life changing surgery that includes a permanent change to their eating habits and probably what they eat too. I don't think they deserve a pat on the back it's okay, I do think they need a good hard kick in the A**!!!!

Wow, pretty incendiary post. I've sometimes wanted to post that I was hungry or that I couldn't take another day of _____. Glad I didn't. Pretty harsh crowd.

I think that some docs have ridiculously long and strict pre-op liquid diets that are unnecessarily hard and tough to stick to for so long. Post op, I tend to agree with Iggy - this is serious business I am often shocked that some people don't take it a bit more seriously.

I don't know why it's so shocking to see some people posting about eating harmful things pre or post op. at one point we were all so fat that someone somewhere was probably shocked everytime they saw us eat anything. I'm all for giving support how the person needs it. Many times you can tell from the tone of the OP what they are fishing for. Some people want that kick in the a&& others seem to just want an audience. Sometimes I post most of the time I don't. As a matter of fact most of the topics on here are so repetitive if you've been here for 6+ months, so I guess nothing shocks me anymore. However, if I see another post about someone 4-6 weeks out "not losing weight" I'm gonna scream :-p j/k. All jokes aside many of us are fighting demons of addiction and as helpful and supportive as we all think we are or genuinely want to be we may not be able to reach everyone that has an addiction and having the sleeve doesn't save everyone. As always I say, good luck, God bless, and happy losing!

Funny it doesn't surprise me that people are looking to some how to justify "cheating" . We all know our doctors orders and yes they do vary A LOT!!! It's up to the individual to adhere to those instructions or not..

But I get it. We are getting this surgery because we haven't had long term success with other methods of weight loss. For those of you waiting for surgery it might be very easy to say " well you must be a weak person or a fool if you can't follow your doctors diet" I would like to ask what brings you here to this point of needing WLS...

That being said, I follow what I'm supposed to do because I really want to do the right thing now.

BUT I have my struggles with it some days. Does that make me weak or reckless?

I really tried not to jump in on this one but oh well

You all can have at me now :)

If I had "self control" or was able to "get my addictions under control prior to surgery", then I wouldn't have needed the surgery. The sleeve is a tool, our brain wasn't sleeved, just our tummy. Everyone is different, everyone has different levels of willpower and self control. We cannot help the cravings we have, we try hard to fight the temptations, but sometimes we just need support from others who are going through what we are going through and advice on how they handled it, not a condemning lecture, just support.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
