Only 7 wks post op & pregnant.

Recommended Posts

I am so freaked out right now...I'm only 7 weeks post op and just found out I'm pregnant. I emailed my dr but haven't heard back. I was not planning this at all and we think I may have gotten preggers just before the surgery. I know my dr had me sign something about waiting 18 months...truth is we were done having kids and I never thought this would happen. I just don't know what to do. Any sleeves out there pregnant so soon after surgery? Any input?

I had to take a pregnancy test just before my surgery in pre-op. I even stated that I am already in menopause, but they said it was mandatory.

Follow up with a nutritionist will be paramount for you. I have read of others who got or are pregnant post-op and still lose weight, but having a high quality diet will be so important, and of course pre-natal Vitamins, etc.

First thing is to coordinate with your doctor and nutritionist, and get your first appointment with OB/GYN so you have constant monitoring.

Good luck.

Wow! I am seven weeks out as well and pregnancy is my number one fear! I definitely feel for you. If you plan on keeping the pregnancy, I am sure that there are ways to make it successful...There is a board on here for pregnancy after the sleeve. Maybe they will have some advice. Did your doctor make you do a blood test for pregnancy before your surgery. I know they were adamant about doing one for me the morning of mine. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!

Yes...I did too, we are wondering if maybe I wasn't far enough along for it to show up. I will have to find a Nut soon and I'm still shock.

You would have to have been pre 12 days...at the surgery date to not have shown up... and for some, even as low as 8 and it wouldn't show. Can you date it using that time frame???

It's key to date it now because the anesthesia used in surgery can have some very detrimental effects on the fetus. I learned this the hard way. I had an emergency surgery at 8 days and the surgery damaged the fetus badly. I faced the decision to terminate due to profound fetal issues or move forward but knowing her chances were slim with a guarantee of lifelong medical issues...severe. Fortunately I had a natural miscarriage but it was a heartbreaking time for me and my husband as we had been trying to have a second child for some time. We never achieved that goal.

If only I knew then what I know now about anesthesiology. But....hind sight is always so much better isn't it?

You need to try to date the pregnancy as closely as possible and don't wait, don't email, go now to your OBGYN as you are going to have to make some important decisions very quickly. First obviously if you wish to carry this pregnancy is the first one. I am not implying judgement on that either way, but the earlier you make this decision the easier on you dear. Secondly, if you are going to continue, you need to have testing done to ensure that the baby is ok for both your health and the baby's. And if there is something wrong, you need to know the scope so you can make the hard decisions again, as early as possible. And lastly, if the pregnancy is going to continue you need to start immediately on a medically supplemented diet program because you can't get enough nutrition in to support the pregnancy in a healthy way this early out from your surgery.

Whatever you do, I wish you the best. This is scary and of course a hard decision to have to deal with. I didn't want to scare you, just to share the road I traveled so that it might possibly help you out. Take great care of you!!! And best of luck with the future, whatever you do!!!

Thank you! We have been doing the math and for sure it was right after the surgery. And we are still trying to figure out what to do....we have other children but were not expecting this at all. I've never had to face a situation like this...I am so confused and stressed. But I do appreciate all your advice and thoughts. I will be praying on this and I am waiting to hear from my surgeon and my ob. I hope to have appts this week.

I say go to your OBGYN and tell them what is going on. Then get with a nutritionist, take your Vitamins, eat the right things and give the baby a chance and keep yourself healthy. I am going to pray for you that everything will turn out right. I think that heir is a reason this baby has came into your life (:

This is just my opinion I thought I'd share (:

I spoke with my sleeve dr and he reassured me that the baby will be fine, I see my ob this week and she says everything will be fine as well. I am feeling much better about the situation, not ideal but if this is meant to be, it's meant to be. I believe things happen for a reason...:)

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
