Can I still eat Sushi?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'll be getting my band on Nov 6th and I'm currently on a liquid diet up until then. I wondered if I would eat sushi rolls after the band. I love love love sushi and I would feel very bad if I couldn't have it anymore. Could I get a whole roll? I used to eat three at a time (of course, that's why I need surgery).

You can eat what's in the sushi rolls, but the rice and seaweed might be very problematic once you have a good level of restriction. You'll see other threads on this very subject, in fact, if you look around. :)

I was thinking the same thing last night. I could do w/out the rice but I love the salty seaweed. I plan on doing some creative cooking after I've had my surgery. I'm afraid this might be an exercise in futility that could bring on a :sick feeling. food has been such an all consuming crutch that I think I'll end up learning its new role the hard way.

Yes you can eat the fish on top of the sushi, and you may be able to tolerate the sticky rice. I went to a Sushi all you can eat bar, for dinner a few weeks ago. First of all, I am long past getting my monies worth, I just want good healthy food. I knew that I would not be able to eat much, but I did eat small peices of fish, and left the rice on my plate. I figured the Protein was most important, and the rice would just fill me up quickly. Enjoy your sushi! :)

I can eat it with no problem - the rice and the seaweed as well. but two small handrolls would be enough to have me very full and would take me a long time to eat - sushi is a go slow food for me, but still something I can eat.

I am a big fan of sushi...because of what I've read on other threads I haven't attempted nori but I can manage the fish, rice, pickled seaweed, and the ginger.

That's one of the wonderful and weird things about the Band... no two people are the same. You take two bandsters who are roughly equally restricted and one will be able to eat half a tuna sandwich and the other person can't tolerate the tuna or the bread in any way, shape or form.

The only way you will know if you can handle sushi is if you try it. You may be able to handle everything, the nori, the rice and the fish. Or you might find that salmon is a no-go while tuna or eel is just fine. I used to really like octopus and calamari, but now I find them too chewy... not worth it.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
