First Day Of "soft" Food... Already Not Going Well...

Recommended Posts

I would rather be doing "real food" at least a little. These Protein Shakes are getting hard to handle as well as Greek yogurts. I would love to have an egg for Breakfast and some cottage cheese for lunch. But then I get scared about going against what my dr recommends. Even so other people are allowed. I was just also given my Vitamin list that I should start now.

I have to say I had about three tiny pieces of a scramble egg tonight and I was fine. But they were really tiny pieces. I guess I would have to eat a bit more of an egg to see if it agrees with me or not. But not allowed till week 5! Grrrrrr.

I remember the first time I roasted garlic, my son came in the house and said

"mom why are you burning tires"

When I started on soft food, I could only eat about 3 bites, and I had to wait awhile in between them.

The ricotta bake is a good recipe for the soft stage.

take ricotta cheese and mix in an egg and mozzarella cheese and Parmesan if you like that. cover it with spaghetti sauce and bake it. yummy!

I made the ricotta bake the other night and added Ms. Dash Italian seasoning, and eggs to the ricotta mm mm good :) I can eat ground turkey I'm in the soft stage now, so I just browned the ground turkey, and added that to my spaghetti sauce and poured it over the ricotta and baked it.

I am allowed ricotta cheese I think at week five. So if I were to make this ricotta bake then I guess it would be ok. What would you do/think?

You know Jayne...I"m the first to say "follow your docs rules to the letter" but geeze woman...I was allowed yogurt at day two with one doc and day five with the other (both listed it as a full liquid phase item). While the first doc didn't thrill me in the end, the second is with a top notch hospital and he's amazing. He's conservative, but ummm there is a diff between conservative an anal :P

Cottage cheese was also on my full liquids program, but I was told to chew well. eggs were on the soft food stage (week three with one and two with the other doc). Softly scrambled (use Water to whip them up, not milk and you get a fluffier egg). They are a diet staple for me. As is the cottage cheese because the 1% or 2% fat is so high in Protein.

I wouldn't suggest you have a steak at this point...but sheesh...did I mention anal? LOL eggs sit really nicely with me...actually though, everything but a Protein Bar has been great for me, but I eat a tiny bit (never more than half a cup and at 3 weeks it was more like a 1/4 cup). I'd chew til you are a moist pulp in your mouth and eat the above. For the eggs early on, I found either ketchup or salsa with sour cream made the eggs even moister when I was eating them and they went down really easily.

My Dr said two weeks out to start eggs any style, but I agree.. It'd hard. For me it feels like i ate a rock. I make a soft cooked scrambled egg. I was told to mix a little Water instead of milk. Cottage cheese even hurts. I figure things will get better with time..i hope

People are always anxious to start eggs. A lot of people have said that eggs don't really agree with them early out. Eggs don't seem to be all that sleeve friendly.

The best thing to do is try a bite and see how it sits. You have to go really slow and chew it up until it's liquid in your mouth. Then wait, and see how you feel.

Scrambled eggs are the only thing I can CONSISTENTLY eat and stay down...last night, I had about 3 oz. of baked salmon and threw some of it up...the day before, I had tuna fish and threw that up. I am slowly learning that feeling of STOP though.

Reading this is like food porn. I cannot wait to have soft foods!!! All these suggestions are great though. Looking forward to my 1st post op visit next week to see if I can advance some. Eating some kidney Beans really mushed up and Protein Shakes, greek yogurt and creamed Soup.< /p>

When you folks say you are 3 weeks out do you mean you just finished two complete weeks since day of surgery and are now STARTING week 3? Or are you really three full weeks post op and starting week 4? It can be a bit confusing actually - well at least to me it is. I am anxious to start soft foods. I try a little and then it hurts and I'm uncomfortable for a while but it passes and then I'll try it again. Apparently I'm not supposed to start this phase for yet another week, but I need something other than broth and liquid Protein. And when does the "stuck" feeling end before passing through to your stomach? thanks

...when I told the nutritionist that the dr told me at week 2 that I could have yogurt and sf Jello she was like ok if the dr told you then ok. I don't understand why every dr has different guidelines. So I am thinking is it ok to advance sooner than what dr says. I see MANY others seem to have a more lenient plane to follow than me. Would it really be bad to have an egg or cottage cheese before my dr says its ok? I think my dr is a bit more stricter than others even though he let me have the yogurt at two weeks.

Started eggs, cottage cheese, yogarts after one week. I would never be able to follow otherwise..

I would say that the turkey was probably too much. The egg on its own might have been fine, but some people dont tolerate that well. Next time wait for instructions.

Props to the people with the stricter diets. I'm on soft diets as well(started on the 4th week post-op)& am 5wks post-op tomorrow. My nut did not give me any sort of list. I came with a list of foods I wanted to know about & she ok'd things like shredded chicken, lunch meat, ground turkey, looked bored & said, "just font eat a lot of crackers". Huh?I did clears jn the hospital,2 wks of full liquid, 2 weeks puréed (blech--I never want to see meat that texture again in my life). I feel full quickly with dense proteins&eggs. I noticed they said no seafood til I'm on regular diet. I've been eating crab since purees. I will never give that up.

I found these websites that have more explicit diet plans:

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
