How Long Do You Have To Crush Pills?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 10/22...so far all meds must be crushed or in liquid form? Is this a forever change or will I eventually be able to ingest pills again?

I was able to take Tylenol rapid release extra strength caps. 5 days post-op, one at a time. Now I can take 2 together in one bigger sip.

You're still newly sleeved. I was able to resume taking whole meds after a month. I used to take all of my meds & Vitamins all at once pre-sleeved, but that is in the past! Lol. I do have to look for smaller fish oil pills since mine are gigantic. Tried it once but didn't like how it went down. Good luck!

You will want to check with your own doc but for me I was 45 days out and taking pills in whole form with my doctors approval.

My surgeon is on the conservative side of this discussion, suggesting that I continue to use chewable, liquid, or mixable capsules (ones that can be opened, dumped, and mixed into something) on a permanent basis. I'm perfectly fine with that.

What's the danger? Should I be concerned that my surgeon didn't say to crush?

I had to for the first 4 weeks.

My surgery was on 9/10. I've been taking pills for 3 weeks. I think my surgeon might have preferred that I not do so yet, for me, it was either take meds as pills or I simply wasn't going to take them........ Many compromises I have willing made since surgery, but crushing pills was my "line in the sand." :)

My surgeon said they could get stuck, or interfere with the healing process early on.

FYI - you shouldn't crush any meds that are extended-release as it will ruin their efficacy. I'm a week post-op and only have one med that is extended-release (Prilosec). I open that one up, pour it on my tongue and take with a sip of Water.< /p>

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
