I Started My Period Two Days Before Surgery - Is This Okay?

Recommended Posts

This may be a stupid question...but will this cause any issues?

I just started my period...go figure. I guess with stress it came a little early.

I have an IUD so some times its just a trickle. But, with the blood thiner they will give me on my surgery date will that pose a problem?

I guess I should let my surgeon know.

What about "protection" - do I pad up or use a tampon?

I feel so stupid asking this...but this my first surgery ever - and I am a little nervous / stupid about this stuff.

Thanks!!!!!

It shouldn't cause any issues. let your surgeon know, but it happens! I am sure it happens frequently. :)

It shouldn't be an issue with the surgery but make sure you tell them. I never had surgery with my period but I had a very heavy

period when I had a colonoscopy and I was worried about leaking out even with a super tampon. They gave me disposal underwear and a pad

for the colonoscopy which they just pulled down during the procedure. I know it's gross but this must happen to so many women.

You will both be fine. I'm guessing that you have been on fairly aggressive pre-op diets? The fat you've been losing the last few weeks is what triggered this, it is completely normal.

Just don't be surprised if your cycle becomes very unpredictable for a while. I've seen several cases where ladies have cycles last twice as long as usual or even happen twice in the same month.

Your body is getting bombarded with the estrogen being released from fat stores.

Hope that helps you.

I just had my surgery on the 10th and I too had my period. It was very light so I did not tell anyone or use a tampon. My surgeon did not allow underwear. Remember you are only out for about 2 hours and then you can get up and fix yourself up. I have had another surgery in the past and told them, after they were finished with my surgery they put a pad on me. Tell the nurse and they will advise what is best to do. I am sure they see this all the time, no worries!

I was at the end of mine when I had my procedure done. When the hospital nurse called with all the pre-op instructions a few days before she said wear a pad no tampons. You will be fine :-). Good luck.

Mine started right after surgery and it was a bit of a struggle to reach the places that need to be reached for cleaning and tampon insertion. Very difficult. A pad would be better.

it is great the way the ? that run through your mind are answered here, i am 54 and still have periods , really hope they stop soon, lol, but am worried that i might get one, but it is because not only are they heavy put i have always had terrible pain and have to take meffenemic acid pills also known as ponstan , it is a high dose inflammatory and is the only thing that stops the very bad pain. I have thought about taking them before for a few days in case, but am worried if it will effect the op. thanks everyone, x

I keep track of my period with a iphone app and I'm supposed to get my period the day of surgery! That's gonna suck so bad to deal with period cramps during recovery. My cycles have been 30 days for the past 4 periods. Gosh it's gonna suck to wear a pad *sigh*

This happened to me, too. I started the morning of my surgery. I told the nurse and took some pads and moist wipes with me to the hospital. It wasn't a whole lot of fun added to the process, but neither was it a big deal.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
