11 Days Is That Enough Time?

Recommended Posts

Hello I am having my gastric sleeve on Oct 2, I am only taking 11 days of vacation one being the day before to get ready. I can take a medical leave but dont want it to seem suspect because I am choosing to keep my choice private. Therefore, I decided to take a vacation of 11 days to heal. I am a very strong individual and can take pain, am I doing myself an unjust by just taking a vacation verses a leave? I work in a sale phone store which requires no lifting but a lot of standing and some walking.

Say you're getting your gallbladder removed and use your medical leave. You'll want your vacation time to hit the beach when you're skinnier. ;)

Two weeks is probably the minimum for non-physical jobs. I took three, thought that was perfect.

Good luck.

I took 2 weeks leave and I sit in an office all day. I'm also a tough, refuse to give into pain, recover quick kinda person. I definitely could have gone back earlier because I was bored, however it was nice to get to have naps and focus on sipping my liquids! Taking leave vs. vacation is your personal choice. I have a supportive workplace, and I also figured when I was on a liquid diet they would figure something was up! However, I have now used all my sick leave, so if something happens I have to use my vacation days.

11 days will be plenty. I"m 65 yrs old and I went back to work on the 11th day. My drain was pulled a week after surgery. Once that was out, I really started feeling better. That drain made me feel lousy just mentally. For me, the fatigue I felt is what took the longest to get through. I think I felt tired for a month or two.

You are going to be so happy you had this surgery! It's made me a new woman. My life is so much happier and healthy now!!

Could you tell them that you're having a medical procedure? If they ask for additional details you could always say it's personal and you'd like to keep it private, but it does have an extended recovery time. If you have a hiatal hernia like I did and they are repairing that too, you could just cite that as the reason. I know when I told my boss she said that she understood it was my personal business and if I decided not to tell anyone she would respect that and not say anything either. That way you don't burn through your vacation time. I just know that I don't wanna burn up vacation time doing anything but enjoying myself.

I don't think I was ready to go back on day 11, but I also work a job where I walk/stand for 8+ hours. I can imagine if I worked a job where I got breaks or was allowed to sit, I would have been able to go back probably toward the end of the second week, so I guess possibly by day 11.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
