What Do You Tell People When You Dont Want Them To Know?

Recommended Posts

When asked how she lost all the weight she had gained to play Brigdet Jones in that movie, Renee Zellweger said that she went hiking for a weekend in the hills near her Beverly Hills home. Laughable to us, yes, but I'm sure people believed it.

Carrie, I think I added you as a friend.?! LOL I had to get on my laptop to do that. The first few days were pretty hard just like everyone here, I am sure. The VSG left me pretty bruised across the middle and I had some pain a few inches above the staple site. Over all... I feel good. I never felt sick, got sick or wanted to die. However, I still want to kill my husband every time he walks in the house with food! I am down 16 lbs as of this morning and in 11 days... that never happend on a regular diet. How are you feeling about all this?

I heard the Paleo diet is really fast weightloss. I think I'm going to say that! I just read about it last night. It's simple carb restrictions and focuses on food that is naturally available. Made sense to me! I'm also going to say the gallbladder thing too. And they actually found that I have a complete right sided heart block so I'm goin to say the doctor told me I had to lose weight bc I'm prediabetic. I'm not really prediabetic but it runs on both sides of my family so probably eventually I would have gotten it. But this is a great thread. Me and my mom have been trying to figure out what to say. I haven't seen my coworkers in a long time. I was 232 when I last saw them. It will bet very noticeable when I get back in two weeks because now I'm 213.6. My surgery date was 8/1.

That's a great idea! I just read about that diet too. Hmmm. I did have a hiatal hernia so I might add that I had that repaired too. Now I'm feeling a littl less anxious. :)

That's awesome! I'm feeling great now! It never was horrible but now it's nothing. I have bruising still but the glue came off so my belly button finally feels good. The hard glue was hurting. I'm at 12 lbs with a total of maybe 65 lbs to lose. I also want to kill my husband! He deep fried some crap the other night and I mentioned how I'd like some (didn't of course), and he looked at his plate and said, "I'm an *******, huh?" lol so now he's going to start dieting on Monday.

It's funny that you say that. As I am lying in the hospital bed all drugged up, my husband decides to go to the caf to get some lunch. Does he eat his lunch down in the caf? NO! He brings it back up to the room. Do you know what he brought in my room after I have just had all but a teeny tiny bit of my stomack removed.... FRIED CHICKEN! I am southern Carrie, and this is a staple for southern people. ALSO... IT IS ONE OF MY GREATEST WEAKNESSES! If I could have shot him, I would have.

That being said, I do have the most wonderful husband whom is so very supportive. I guess he just lost his brain while I was losing my stomack. LOL

Here's what I do, and it avoids a lot of things.

I've been telling people most of the truth. 1) that my dr told me that if I didn't get under control, I would be diabetic in 2 years and dead within 10. (2) my doctor referred me to a nutritionist and I have been working closely with her. And (3) I keep myself under 1500 calories a day, and offer them the www.Emilybites.com recipe website and tell them my whole family loves the food and they should try it.

All of these things are true, and more importantly, this way I'm not giving out false info about fad diets that won't work for others. The way I figure it, if I tell them 'I'm using atkins' or some other diet, then they see my success and try it themselves and continue that cycle. This way, the worst they can do by following me, is make an appointment with a NUT and start eating healthy.

Also, I actually DID have a hernia that my dr fixed during my sleeve surgery, so I was able to honestly tell them I had to get a hernia fixed.

Good luck with your journey

I have only told my husband, mother, and sister-they are my support team. I tell others that I have been re-educated about eating healthy. I have a nutritionist, trainer, and have gone through psychological testing to learn how to eat healthy! Everything I said is true, I just leave out the surgery part because it's nobodys business. Also many wouldn't understand!

Ha! How mean! I don't even think they realize how hard they make it sometimes. He's trying to be better but I think I'm just going to have to exercise a lot more self-control than I used to. The nice thing is that I only have so much room now...so if I cheat, it'll be like 2 bites of something.

I usually tell people that I'm following a high Protein, meat and veggies diet with limited carbs....

But now if someone comes out and ask me if I had the sleeve done, I tell the truth and say yes I did....otherwise if they dont ask I won't tell....

lol

I am honest. I don't want to say oh I just watch what I eat because these are some of the same people who may benefit from the surgery themselves and knowing that they can ask questions is important. I recently started attending weight watchers meetings (I am a lifetime member now back at my lifetime weight so it is free). I want this for support on a weekly basis as well as accountability. I told my leader straight up. I had 2 ladies ask (one I knew personally and can't imagine she didn't know) this week what I had been doing. They want to know how long it took - well I think the 18 months it has taken me shows them it isn't a "quick fix!" With the exception of the first few months post op, my losses are equivalent to what I lost on weight watchers on a monthly basis.

I'm 10 days out and have told the people who matter. I go back to work in a couple weeks and I'm just waiting for the comments..."Carrie' date=' you look great! What are you doing??" which will be nice comments to hear, but I'm just not ready for the whole school (I work at a high school) to talk about me. I know...I need to figure out how to stop caring so much about what people think.

I was thinking of saying gallbladder surgery , which prompted a new diet (low fat) and once I started losing and feeling better I continued... I don't know. It's probably easier to tell the truth but I feel ashamed in a way. The nice thing is that I'm a lower BMI (started at 32), so I know the weight loss will come off slower. So maybe it won't be so obvious...

What did/do you guys say?[/quote']

Say nothing. You don't have to tell them. If you think you have to say something, just say you been working out and eating right. Tell them how you portion size your foods. Tell them how you dont eat after 6pm. You can say you eat those smart one dinners made by weight watchers. I just had my gallbladder removed Thursday. I would not use that story.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
