So, part of me wants to just make a "tell all" status update on FB about my upcomng surgery. The other part of me is afraid of the responses.

Should I tell people? Should I not?

Anyone have experience?

I did a tell all on FB. I was surprised at how MANY people were encouraging. Now they all beg me to keep them updated and post pics. I was not ashamed. People who judge you are NOT people you need in your life.

Interesting question. I have no intention on posting but that just me. I think that's totally up to you :)

I agree that it is a personal preference. Just know that the more support you have...the easier it will be for you. I can't imagine keeping it a secret when I used to be a binge eater and now I can only eat an ounce or two. The gig would be up in my circle of friends and family. lol

I made a Facebook group and made it secret. I invited all of my relatives and a lot of select friends. Not a single bad response. Actually everyone was very supportive. One of my cousins actually came out and told me that she had recently been sleeved. This was a nice approach for me because I plan on telling more people so I can slowly add whoever I want to the group! You will make the right decision for you :) good luck

I am 11 weeks out from surgery and look like a different person. If I had not done a tell all there would be a lot of people assuming that I had surgery. I don't think the stigma is really there anymore. Most people know someone who has had it done and had good results. You will get more comments to your face but you will at least avoid a lot from behind your back. And yes, people love my updates and have been AMAZINGLY encouraging. I've gotten emails from old high school acquatainces wanting to know how to get the process started. Telling all was the best decision ever!

I announced my surgery on Facebook and everyone was really supportive. I've been updating as I go with things that happen and everyone has been nothing but supportive and kind. It really made me feel a lot better to know that everyone is supporting me.

I'm not put on FB for a couple of reasons. First, I don't put a lot of personal information on there and never have. Second, because some of those people I'm not really close to and I'm somewhat selective about who knows I had the VSG.

I also made a secret Facebook page. I only told my best friend, of course my hubby and kids; hubby told his brother and a girl at work who had the bypass. I think I will "tell all" once it is over. Right now, I kind of feel that it is no one's business but mine.

That is a good question, one that I also asked myself just a couple of weeks ago. I decided that I was not going to do a blast on FB only because those that are really close to me know. It's not so much the I don't want people to know, it's more of I just want to do it and then say what I did after the fact. That is just my preference.

I haven't decided yet either. I work in a hospital setting with many very opinionated hardcore health nuts (makes sense I guess). I figure post-op they will figure it out soon enough. I put some 'feeler questions' out there to see what my co-workers and people close to me thought about WLS; and got a lot of negative input....so I just told myself, I'm doing this for me and my health...bottom line. Will figure it out as I go, as far as what I am willing to share....that said, I am pretty darn excited:)

I am glad you all had positive feedback. My husband is the only one showing any support to me. My family and friends are all begging me not to get sleeved. It's making it extremely hard to make up my mind whether to proceed or not.

What's so hard?

Are your doing this for you or your friends? If you're doing this for you, then it doesn't really matter what everyone else thinks, huh?

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
