Gaining Weight Back

Hey guys, I've been doing pretty good with my sleeve. I had surgery the 31st of Jan. and I've lost about 85 pounds. I've been doing pretty well excercising and eating well but sometimes i have bad weeks where i dont always make the best choices. I'm scared that i'm gonna end up gaining weight. is it a possibility to gain weight back after a certain point in surgery?

GOOD QUESTION. BUT I DONT SEE HOW WITH THE NEW STOMACH ITS SO SMALL JUST DONT STUFF IT I WOULD THINK

I've heard that a lot of people gain 15 or 20 pounds back after reaching goal weight and that some others gain more than that. I think it's more a question of what you eat, not how much you eat.

My mom was not sleeved but she had the DS. She is 5'3" and got down to like 125 lbs. since then she has gained around 20 lbs. she eats pretty much whatever she wants. Hope this info helps.

It is absolutely possible. Would it be tough? Yes. But it can be done. I have a friend, who told me about the surgery, who lost 100 pound sin 6 months and made it to goal. She, like me, loves to bake and ended up going back to it. Well, 6 months later and she said she went from a 4 to a 6. She has been gaining weight for a while now and was kind of ignoring it.

I have heard of worse stories though, like 50 pounds gained.

So just be cautious. If you are eating nutritious foods it should be hard to overeat but sugary foods tend to be sliders.

Well, I know people who had RNY and gained all their weight back so yeah, I'd say it's possible with sleeve as well. But, the good news is that it's not magic. The person I know ate terribly once she reached her goal weight and forget about exercise. So, I'm certain it's avoidable.

Oooohhhhh yeeeeaahhh...If ANYone can figure out how to fit some dense calories and fat into a tiny sleeve, it would be me, and I know this about myself, so the key will be continuing to look at this surgery as a permanent lifestyle change. Not "ok, I lost my weight, so I can go back to eating like I want." Uh uh!!! NOt gonna happen. Those delicious tidbits will have to be taken in very limited amounts and times after goal is reached. Exercise has to remain a permanent part of this new lifestyle as well. It's a whole new mindset. It has to be.

Thank you everyone! i agree i think i just have to stay focused on what I eat. I never have appetite, I never feel hungry but sometimes i get those devilish cravings that haunt me. Tomorrow I'm gonna get back on track start bumping up my excercise and Protein so that I can get to my goal!

Look at Carnie Wilson (of Wilson Phillips). She had bypass and I recently saw her on a Celebrity Homes show and she's at least 250lbs now. It is definitely possible. I have two friends who had RNY and they have put on about 1/2 their weight back on. Besides bad food choices, they graze all day on the bad foods. Lots of potato chips and other carbs in small doses all day, gets the pounds on. They also think soft = healthy so they eat a lot of yogurt. Going back to bad food choices, yogurt with chocolate chips, brownies and caramel isn't much of a diet food.

I think you just have to accept the life style change and stay committed to not grazing and eating well. I'm scared to death of becoming a grazer. I'm equally as scared of being a Protein bar/shake fanatic and only eating greek yogurt all day too. I want to enjoy my food and enjoy flavors but just make small, good choices.

I'm not giving up.

It is absolutely possible to gain weight back. I've had friends that had by-pass done and they weigh more now then when they started. The best advice anyone gave me was that it is a tool, not the ultimate answer. I still have to be responsible and make good choices with food and exercise. I've had weeks where I don't lose any and would start to panic, well now I've been stuck for over 6 months and I don't panic anymore, I just keep on track. I know I'll eventually start dropping again. It's rare for me to get hungry, I mean like once every 3 months, but I do catch myself grazing and it is usually when my husband has stuff I normally wouldn't eat in the house (like chips). I started keeping a water bottle with me and would drink some Water any time I got the urge to go grab the chips. I have a friend that uses a rubber band to keep her from grazing.

I havent had surgery yet and I am still a few months away at least, but I worry about the same thing. I lost about 120lbs a few years ago and gained it all back plus more. I am hoping surgery will be the tool I need to stay on track.

Our psychologist told us that 22% gain their weight back. I am always an optimist & thought--ok, 78% keep it off, LOL

He did tell us how they do it, they graze all day. They choose high calorie, not nutrient rich foods. They drink liquid with their food, thereby creating "sliding" straight thru your sleeve so you don't get the fullness sensation. And last, they succumb to head hunger--gotta nip that.

Sounds like you are suffering from behavior fatigue & just need to get your mojo back--good luck!

This exactly. Stick to the nutritious stuff and avoid your slider foods. It IS possible to gain back a lot of the weight you lose if you don't stick to your diet. In addition - mix in some exercise 3 times a week (walking even) and that will definitely help.

Nothing new to add except that, if you play your cards right and use the opportunity of being sleeved to truly alter your eating habits to healthy ones, you can continue to lose (albeit very slowly!) for a long time. I'm still losing at almost 18 months out--it's super slow now, like one pound a month drop, but it's still going. My husband just dropped into Onderland (199, thank you!) at 2-1/2 years out! He was sleeved a year ahead of me. So yeah, use the sleeve for volume restriction, but also use this time to wean off of those foods that were never your friends--ditch them! Start new, healthy habits that will keep you slender and healthy for the rest of your life. Best wishes to you!!

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
