First Time Drinking Alcohol Post Op

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what everyones experience was like. How much & what did you drink? Did you feel more inebriated than you would have before surgery? How long after surgery did you have your first drink?

I'm only 13days post op but I'd really like to have some wine at a wedding in september....I haven't asked my doc how long I have to wait before drinking yet.

Can't wait to hear some answers. I'm about 4wks post op and have just wanted sangria but avoided it bc of high sugar content. :(

Had my first drink probably 2 or 3 months after surgery and absolutely hit me faster and harder than it did before. So much so that I mostly abstain from it except on the rare occassion. Ease into it and see how your body reacts before diving into shots. :P

I had a jager bomb at two months or two and a half. Can't remember which. But it went ok. Might have hit me a little harder, but nothing to bad.

^^^ what he said. Be for surgery I could easily drink 6 drinks and barely feel it. About 6-7 weeks after I had 2 drinks and was completely LIT-UP. I could barely walk.

You were allowed to have alcohol 12 days after your surgery?

I read a blog the other day on here about an experience with drinking. I sure hope Tmorgan won't mind me sharing it here. She gives her account of her experience. http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/blog/1376/entry-3999-they-took-my-irish-drinking-crown/

I think I waited about 10 or 12 weeks. I have about 6 oz. or red wine and I am buzzing. I've also had a margaritta a few times and one is all I need. It definitely doesn't take much now and it hits me pretty fast.

I am a big beer drinker - or at least I was - I tried a beer this weekend. I was 7 weeks out. But I was drinking it so slow (16 oz beer in 1 hour) that I never felt a thing. Basically felt like I wasted 4 bucks. Obviously beer is more filling than other drinks and has carbonation, so it requires a bit more care than a glass of wine. I also think my tolerance was pretty high, so maybe 1 beer, regardless of drinking speed, is not going to do anything.

I used to drink a lot of beer, now none. I just do not see me drinking much at all anymore. Maybe to be social if necessary - Not worth the cash or calories

Alcohol will "feel" different after surgery for most of us in one way or another. I'm one of the ones who found it hit a lot harder than pre-surgery. I also discovered the hard way that it makes it almost impossible to tell how much is actually IN your stomach at a given time--it seems to make things relax to the point that my usual "I'm full" signals don't work very well... I'll leave the rest to your imagination, but it was not pretty and I didn't even get to enjoy a buzz!! LOL

As with all things post-sleeve, caution and paying attention to your body are the keys--only problem is that it's difficult to do that with the alcohol working in you. :-) Slow is your best bet.

I like to have a couple of Jack Daniels on the rocks with a cigar on a Friday or Saturday ***ht. I tried it last Friday (I'm 5 weeks out) and it was no different for me than pre op! In fact, I had 3 of them. Nice mellow buzz as I'd usually get but it didn't hit me any harder although I was drinking much slower and taking small sips.

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
